worked all night to remove artifacts
from the home.
Conditions were very difficult,
her supervisor lost three toes to
frostbite. The Salvation Army was
on the scene and made a bad situa
tion more bearable by providing
food and encouragement to the
rangers.
The summer of 1982 found
Fasnacht working at the Indiana
Dunes National Seashore on Lake
Michigan. There was considerable
anti-Park Service sentiment in the
community, so conditions were not
ideal.
There she also experienced her
first drownings. Riptides claimed
the lives of three swimmers that
summer.
After spending time at
Independence National Historic
Site, Fort Pulaski National Historic
Site and Cumberland Island
National Seashore, Fasnacht got a
call to go to Shiloh National
Military Park in Tennessee.
She was the first female law

After stints at Fort Sumter and
St. Augustine’s Castillo De San
Marcus, she was a Chattahoochee
River Ranger for several years. That
job involved 12 to 15 arrests per
day on the river. She performed
alcohol-related river rescues, and
also rescued several fishermen from
rising water.

During the Yellowstone fires of
1988, she went to help combat the
blaze and was the only female on
her crew. During the six weeks she
was out west, she went through a
hanowing ordeal, losing equipment
from firestorms and having to run

In 1990 Fasnacht went to work
for the Corps of Engineers at Lake
Lanier. She was in charge of public
relations and safety programs.
