Facts to know about retirement
-It is an unfortunate fact that
many Americans spend less time
planning for their retirement then
.planning for their vacations. All
ft takes is intelligent planning -
and a clear understanding of the
myths that hinder us from build
ing a secure retirement.
Consider the following myths:
• Myth #1: I’m too young to
worry about retirement. You’re
never too young to make plans.
The sooner you begin saving for
retirement, the less you’ll have to
put aside. For example, if you
want to have a $200,000 nest egg
by age 65, you’ll only have to
save about $26 a week if you
start at age 35. But if you wait
until you’re 55 to start, you’d
have to put aside $233 every
seek.
(Both cases assume that your
money is invested earning a
hypothetical 9-percent return.
This example is for illustrative
purposes only and is not intended
to reflect the actual performance
of any security. Investing

State’s, metro’s jobless rate drops
State Labor Commissioner
Michael Thurmond said Thursday
that Georgia’s unemployment rate
declined to 3.6 percent in
November. The state’s jobless
rate was also 3.8 percent in
December 1997.
“For the second straight month,
the decline in the rate was closely
tied on the holiday shopping sea
son,” Thurmond said.
“Leading up to Christmas, retail
ers do most of their hiring in
November and December, as part
time and temporary workers are
added to their sales forces. In fact,
three out of every four workers
added during the month were
: hired by retailers. In January, how
* ever, the unemployment rate usu
ally goes up when retailers lay off
workers.”
The metro Atlanta’s unemploy
jnent rate declined to 2.8 percent
in December, down from 3.0 per
cent in November. The area’s job
less rate was also 3.0 percent in
December 1997.
Atlanta and the other six metro
areas had declining unemploy
ment rates during the month, with
the decreases due mainly to sea
sonal factors, as retailers hired
some part-time and temporary
workers during the holiday shop
ping season.
“Atlanta continues to have one of
the lowest unemployment rates
among the metro areas,”
Thurmond said.
“While we were pleased with the
decline in the rate for December,
we know that some employers
have jobs that are unfilled,
because of a shortage of workers
with the skills and training to meet
their specific needs. My goal is to
develop a work force with the
skills to meet the job demands of
employers throughout Georgia.”
Retailers in the Atlanta area
added 7,700 new workers during
the month, pushing the area’s non
farm jobs to 2,081,600, as overall
unemployment declined by almost

profit or a loss.)
• Myth #2: I won’t need much
to live on. Many experts esti
mate that on average, to maintain
your standard of living in retire
ment, you’ll need 60 to 80 per
cent of your pre-retirement
income. And that income has to
continue to grow enough in an
attempt to keep up with inflation.
• Myth #3: My kids will take
care of me. Most children want
to lend their aging parents a
hand, but many can’t afford to.
About the time you’re ready to
retire, they’ll be paying their
childreh’s college tuition - and
saving for their own retirement.
You’d be wise, therefore, to leave
the kids out of your plans.
• Myth #4: Social Security will
4,000 to 59,700.
In December, the number of non
farm jobs in Georgia rose to
3,826,400, up by 16,700 from
November, with 11,900, or 71 per
cent, of those in retail trade. More
than one-half of the new jobs
added were in the 20-county

State Labor Commissioner
Michael Thurmond said
Thursday that the unemploy
ment rate in the Georgia
Mountains region declined to
2.8 percent in December, down
from 2.9 percent in November.
The area’s jobless rate was 3.0
percent in December 1997.
The Georgia Mountains
region and most other areas of
the state had declining unem
ployment rates during the
month, with the decreases due
mainly to seasonal factors, as
retailers hired some part-time
and temporary workers during
the holiday shopping season.
“The Georgia Mountains
area continues to have an unem
ployment rate in the two percent
range,” Thurmond said. “While
