Stolen property recovery in Dawson solves burglaries, thefts
By Colby Jones
Staff Writer
Forsyth County investigators recovered more than
$45,000 worth of property Monday, solving at least 30
theft and burglary cases from local businesses and con
struction sites.
After receiving a tip, detectives searched a Dawson
County residence earlier this week where they recovered a
jacuzzi, four-wheeler, go-cart, lawn mower, gas blower,
propane heater, pressure washers, weed trimmers, chain

' results are bad,” Smith said of the
' ' Sponsors of the bill. “Test-taking
'■"* skills are not really what we need.
*’We need better education in
Schools, better knowledge. The
' 'emphasis is in the wrong place.
“Giving credit for a test-taking
course sends a very wrong message
' to our children.”
The school discipline measure
' , won Senate approval 50-2 over
■ / complaints that there are racial dis
parities in which students are pun
'/ished for acting up.
“This allows the teacher to have
‘ more control over their classroom,”
Sen. Connie Stokes, D-Decatur,
told colleagues.
'' Barnes said the legislation will
f give teeth to existing Georgia
school policies and speed up disci
pline procedures geared toward
controlling classrooms.
Educators say deteriorating
school discipline has been one of
* their major concerns. Barnes’ bill
‘•'was backed by the Georgia
Association of Educators, the
.' Professional Association of Georgia
1 ‘ Educators, the Georgia School
Boards Association, the Georgia
‘ School Superintendents Association
’ and the state PTA.
Under the proposal, a teacher
could remove unruly students from
the classroom and send them to the
’’ principal. If the teacher and the prin
cipal disagree on whether the stu
dent should return to class, an edu
cator panel would make that deter
' 1 mination. The process should take
\ no more than two days, he said.
However, Sen. Vincent Fort, D-
Atlanta, noted a study committee on
school discipline last summer heard
- from parents and advocates who
•’ said black children were far more
likely to be kicked out of class
. ‘ rooms than white students.
“School discipline is not being
meted out fairly in this state,” Fort
said. “It’s not something any of us
* . should be comfortable with.
‘. “We can’t shortchange this issue
. ■ of fairness. We cannot turn a deaf
*. 1 ear to the children of Georgia.”
;*• ■- The bill must return to the
r.” House for final approval.

the investigation is continuing.
“We are still inventorying some of the items and
there’s a possibility we will find even more items at the
Dawson County residence that are tied to thefts in the
county,” Hendrix said.
Investigators were in the process Monday of checking
local pawn shops to see if any stolen items turned up there
and more arrests are expected in the case, Hendrix added.
Capt. Leevan Kirk said the thefts and burglaries date
back as far as Christmas.
