approximately 120 million ques
tionnaires for Census 2000.
“There are two key ingredients to
a successful census: identifying
all places people live and getting a
census response from all people
living there,” said James Holmes,
Atlanta Regional Director.
For the first time, the Census
Bureau has entered into a partner
ship with the U.S. Postal Service,
to use their address information to
improve the Census 2000 mailing
list. Also, a new law allows local
Natural gas deregulation bringing choices, confusion
As of March 1, approximately 454,000
Atlanta Gas Light Company customers had
switched to a certified natural gas marketer.
This represents approximately 30 percent of
nearly 1.5 million customers throughout the
state.
For deregulation, Georgia has been divided
into nine areas. Once an area reaches 33 per
cent, marketers will then be allowed to submit
to the Public Service Commission that it is a
deregulated area.
Forsyth and Dawson counties are in the
Atlanta area and as of the end of January, 30.6
percent of the customers had switched. As of
Feb. 1, approximately 318,000 AGLC cus
tomers had switched, representing approxi
mately 22 percent of nearly 1.5 million cus
tomers throughout the state.
Georgia will be deregulated soon. Currently,
the Georgia State Legislature is proposing a
plan that would declare the entire state of

The Census Bureau conducts a
Georgia “competitive.” Remaining customers
will have a 100-day period to select a new nat
ural gas marketer, or one that a customer can
switch to another marketer of his/her choice at
no charge even after the PSC assigns one.
The best way to compare marketers’ prices is
to give the marketers your usage in therms for
a sample month and your premises demand on
the pipes system on the coldest day of the
year.
Those two pieces of information will allow
the marketers to specifically quote what their
charges would be for a given month.
You can find both pieces of information on
your Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) bill.
Your usage in therms is listed in the “therms
used” block in the middle information section
of your bill. Your premise demand factor num
ber is posted under your 10-digit account num
ber in the bottom left hand corner of your gas
bill.
