Falling Leaves: The True
Story of an Unwanted
Chinese Daughter
by Adeline Yen Mah
This is a current-day "wicked
stepmother" story that is some
times difficult to read, but pro
vides inspiration and encour
agement in that the resilience of
a child's spirit triumphs. Mah's
mother died just after she was
born in 1937 and thus she is
considered unlucky. Growing
up in a wealthy Chinese family,
her main female role model was
her father’s sister, who tried
desperately to shield Mah from
Niang, her vicious stepmother.
There’s physical abuse of the
children, but most of the cruelty
is appalling emotional abuse
and forced isolation of Mah by
Niang and her husband. This is
Yen Mah’s first book, which
reads as a fresh and haunting
account of a childhood that
nearly paralyzed its author for
life.

Pet of the Week
Wonderful dog needs loving home
My name is Nike. I am a 1-1/2 year old female
mixed breed dog. I have a beautiful shiny black coat
with a white chest. I look like I am part Terrier and
part Whippet. My name is Nike because I am sleek
like a runner. I weigh about 20 pounds. I get along
well with other dogs, cats and children. I will make a
wonderful family pet because I am so gentle and
affectionate. I even sleep in the bed with my foster
family. I am eager to please and trainable. I am very
intelligent I behave well in the car. I am completely
housebroken. I need to live inside and I need a fence
to run in. I am already spayed and current on all of my
shots. My adoption fee is $l5O. Please call Joyce
Richert, adoption chairman, at (770) 889-1365 to
make an appointment to meet me.
Please call Joyce for information on other available
dogs and cats, as well. Foster homes are desperately
needed until an animal shelter can be built. If you find
an adoptable stray and you can foster until a suitable
home is found, the Humane Society will assist you.
Contact Joyce before you take the animal to a veteri
narian.

Puppies and tips for teething, feeding

Here are some facts about
teething and feeding that may
help:
Your puppy will start teething
between 3 and 4 months of age
and should complete teething by
7 months of age. During this
phase, the puppy will chew on
playthings more frequently, and
you may find signs of blood on
the puppy’s toys. This is perfectly
normal. Sometimes, puppies
