The ribbon cutting for the grand opening of
Baptist Medical Center • Cumming was held
on March 12. Shown above cutting the cere-
Xmomal ribbon are: John Herron, hospital
administrator; Dr. Robert Dunn, a physician at
\ the new hospital who has been practicing in
Forsyth since 1949; and Everett Bennett, for
whom the Everett and Teresa Bennett
Education Center was named. Left, Herron

monies.
The Georgia Baptist name and repu
tation as pillars in the Atlanta medical
community had the Samaritan Drive
facility drawing local physicians and
their patients within months of the
takeover. Part of the acquisition by
Georgia Baptist included a promise to
build a new hospital in Cumming.
Some seven years and $18.3 million
later, the new facility stands waiting for its occupants
to fill the rooms and halls. 1
“We’ve waited a long tim? for this to happen
here,” said Dunn. I
Now the history of medicine in Forsyth is com- i
bined with a near century-old medical giant. i
The new hospital is three stories with 41 private ;
rooms. Eight rooms are dedicated as Intensive Care <
Units. The facility features an emergency room, four
surgical suites and eight emergency room suites, i
Designated as a trauma center, Baptist Medical 1
Center will be equipped to handle catastrophic emer- I
gencies. Baptist Medical Center also offers i
Life Flight, an aeroemergency unit. A unit has already .
been stationed in Forsyth County in advance of the 1
medical center opening. I
The 140-acre campus will eventually house a <
women’s center. Application for the certificate of i
need for an obstetrics unit has been made. 1
Administrator John Herron said he hopes to see the I
realization of that facility in two years. I

Groundbreaking will be sometime in May will be
Morningside Assisted Living Center for seniors.
“We hope to have at least 20 percent leaseoiit
before breaking ground,” said Terry Bozeman,
regional project manager for Life Trust. Also in the'
near future, a second medical office building will be
added. Doctors in this building will primarily focus •
on oncology services.
In the first floor lobby of the new hospital is a*
sculpture of Georgia Baptist founder, Dr. Len-
Broughton with his nurse, treating a child. The sculp
ture was done by local artist Greg Johnson, who also •
rendered the sculpture in front of the Forsyth Courtty ’
Administration building. Dr. Broughton opened the
Baptist Tabernacle Infirmary in 1901. On ribbon cut
ting day, it was said in prayer by a Georgia Baptist
official, “May the rooms and halls of this facility be
used to communicate the love of Jesus Christ-.”’,
Residents are saying that it is this Christian premise '•
that will bring them to Baptist Medical Center in'
their time of need.
