Elliott looking for return ride to days of glory
By Don Coble
Morri* News Service
CONCORD, N.C. lt’s been
years since folks in the North
Georgia mountains have heard the
roar of a race engine - figuratively
and literally.
Bill Elliott, the Huckleberry
Finn of auto racing, left the com
fort of rural Dawsonville - and the
sport’s fast lane -a couple years
ago, and now many wonder if
he’ll ever make it back.
Once the most feared man on
the NASCAR Winston Cup
Series, Elliott has been relegated
by time and circumstance into a
back marker on race days. His
fans remain loyal, voting him the
sport’s most popular driver in 13
of the last 15 years, many know
ing he may never drive into
Victory Lane again.
He’s better equipped to handle
the pressures of the sport, but it

SUWANEE, Ga. - When the Atlanta
Falcons talked with New England about
a possible off-season trade involving
All-Pro running back Jamal Anderson,
it proved the defending NFC champions
consider their roster a work in progress.
Did the Falcons really consider pari
ng with their 1,800-yard rusher? Yes,
mt not for long.
“You’re constantly replacing people,”
said coach Dan Reeves. “You always
want to bring in competition. When
you’ve got somebody pushing some
iody else, it makes both of them, and
your football team, better. We’re always
looking.”
In an era when football teams are
willing to trade away an entire draft for
a single player, the Falcons only want
ed to hear what the Patriots were will
ing to offer for Anderson on draft day.
The offer of a couple of first-round
licks and a slew of other selections
seemed tempting, but it wasn’t nearly
enough to give away the team’s offen
sive leader.
“I am not mad at the Falcons for
either considering the trade or listening
to offers,” Anderson said.
Atlanta, however, wasn’t afraid to pull

might be too late. When he strug

won races. Now he’s surrounded
by corporate spokesmen and man

the business except turning the
steering wheel, and yet there still
isn’t enough time to keep pace.
In the last seven months, Elliott
has employed four different crew
chiefs. He re-organized the family
team, bringing older brother Ernie
Elliott back into a more promi

uncomfortable with the over

mid-1980s, but they’re even more
restless with not staying in the
lead pack.
Fifteen racing seasons ago, the
Elliotts won 11 races and more

shops in Dawsonville. Now the

Ernie Elliott, the engine builder

his comfort level is better now

“It all becomes a situation of
what we become accustomed to

point in time, we have to all admit
that before then there was not a

England could have escalated into a
distraction, but the Falcons assured
their star running back they weren’t
putting him on the market. The call,
Reeves said, was a mere formality.
“If we were serious, we would have
called Jamal long before the draft,”
Reeves said. “But if there’s anybody on
our football team that doesn’t think
things like this happens all the time,
they’re wrong. This is the way it works.
“It was only an issue because it got
out in the public.”
Atlanta has already reached its 80-
man roster two months before the pre
season. All but two of them currently
participate four days a week in a off
season workout program at the team’s
practice facility. The missing players
are Anderson, who has his own training
routine at his home in Utah, and kick
returner Tim Dwight, who’s enrolled at
the University of lowa and running
track.
Reeves started the off-season routine
as a player/coach at Dallas in 1970 and
he said it’s been part of his success
since.
“We won the Super Bowl in 1971 in
Dallas with it, so it works,” Reeves
said. “I believe you can’t be successful
without an off-season program. You not

“People today don’t see it like
we saw it back then. If we got
paid for the amount of time we
had in it, we didn’t make any

Now ail the money in the world
can’t buy Elliott success. His
longtime sponsor, McDonald’s
has grown weary of his finishes
and announced they would not
put their colors on the side of his
race car once their contract
expires at the end of the 2000 sea
son.
“I see this as an opportunity to
cultivate a new relationship with
another top-notch sponsor,”
Elliott said. “I’m very excited to
be carrying the McDonald’s col

on fielding a competitive team.”
If so, he will prove you can go

helps build chemistry.”
Reeves’ moves in the off-season easi
ly define areas of change for the
Falcons.
Keith Brooking, a former Georgia
Tech star and the team’s No. 1 pick a
year ago, showed enough improvement
during his rookie season to warrant the
release of Bennett.
“I knew something had to change,”
Brooking said. “I thought they might
move me to a new position. When I
heard about Cornelius, I was shocked. I
felt bad for Cornelius, but I realized
this is part of the business. Indianapolis
picked him up the next day, so he
wasn’t hurting.
“As for me, I know they consider me
the starter now. But I don’t look at it
that way. I want to come into camp and
earn the job. The job isn’t mine as far
as I’m concerned. That’s the way I
want it.”
Kannell, 25, a former Florida State
star entering his fourth year in the NFL,
gives the Falcons both experience and
youth as a backup to Chris Chandler.
Calloway isn’t a deep threat like
Martin, but a possession receiver who
could easily catch seven or eight passes

round pick, tight end Reggie Kelly of
Mississippi State, will allow Reeves the
option of a two-tight-end set with O.J.
Santiago.
“There’s a certain degree of luck
involved in avoiding injuries,” Reeves
said. “That’s why you want competition
at every position. That protects you.”
Smith said there’s a big change in the
overall attitude of the players heading
into the 1999 season.
“Guys used to have a gripe,” Smith
said. “We all realize it’s a business. But
we all understand winning football
games comes first from now on. That’s
the business we handle first. This team
has it’s head on straight. Everybody’s
pretty cool.
“None of us has to dream what it’s
like to play in the Super Bowl. We
know what it takes. We’re bigger, faster
and better. We knew what our short
comings were and we went out and did
something about that. All of us are
looking forward to the new season. We
want to take it to another level. We
want to punish people next year. We
want to beat them up so they can’t play
the next week.”
