A dog bite incident over the July 4 weekend in the
Biunnon Woods subdivision was the subject ot lively
debate nt a recent meeting of the Forsyth County

Mc( iruder made a motion to permanently classify the

county guidelines However, the motion died for lack

liminaty 2000 budget to the
board of commissioners at its
meeting Monday night
A public hearing is scheduled
tor the Sept 27 meeting at 7 p tn
The final version ot the budget is
scheduled to be adopted Oct 11
Overall, genera! fund rev
enucs are budgeted to be up 1.2
|vercent over ]QOQ fhis includes
k 6 percent increase in property
tax revenues, to $7 84 million,
and a 7 6 percent increase in
sales tax revenues to sll 7 mil
lion
Property taxes only compose
21 percent of the general fund
revenue, with sales taxes making
up 35.5 percent of revenues
Other taxes, such as alcohol
taxes and real estate transfer
taxes make up 17 6 percent of
revenues The balance comes
from various grants permits, the
judicial system and investments
Due to a recent property tax
reappraisal, the board has decid
ed to reduce its share of the coun
ty tax millage from 2.95 mills in
1999. to 2 64 mills in 2000 This
is an 11-percent reduction that
takes into account the historical
growth of the tax digest
With revenues growing 1 2
percent in 2000. expenditures are
expected to nse an equal amount
With the addition of a full
time juvenile court, the judicial
budget has been increased 11 6
percent, from S 3 1 7 million in
1999. to $3 54 million in 2000
The public safety budget will
increase 4 9 percent, going from
$7.23 million in J 999 to $7 58
million in 2000 Public safety is
the single largest expenditure
comprising 22 peri ent of the t«aJ
county budget
The Parks and Recreation
department budget jumped by
10 6 percent, with a total 2000
budget of $2 62 miibon This is
due to she addition of Central
Park and the new employees
required to support the park's
operation
