Commissioners discuss infrastructure projects

At Monday's commission
meeting the board discussed sev
eral items relating to infrastruc- \
tore.
In the first item, the board
responded to a request by F.B.A.
Forsyth Ventures LLC to allow
die development off Ga. 400 and
Hwy. 20 east to be serviced by
city water and sewer.
Forsyth County Water and
Sewer Director Tim Perkins rec
ommended the county retain
water service to the development,
while the city of Cumming would
take over sewer service.
Commissioner John Kieffer
made the motion to ask the city to

• A total of 126,073 items
were checked out by staff to cus
tomers, which is an average of
251 items per hour that the
library is open.
• A total of 42,107 people vis
ited the library, which is an aver

• A total of 1,187 new library
cards were issued.

Commissioner Andy Anderson
made a motion to add Anderson
Lake Road, Martin Terrace and
Freeland Road to a list of roads
where water lines are to be
installed due to wells going dry in
the area.
Commissioner Julian Bowen
provided the second, with the
motion passing unanimously.
The board also approved the
abandonment of a portion of
Freeland Road. Anderson made
the motion to begin the advertis-

officers to serve from September
1999 to September 2000. The
board re-elected the current
members: Mary Helen
McGruder, chairman; Cecile
McGuire, vice chairman; Marcie

• There was discussion of a
debt collection proposal. The
board OK'd a 90-day trial with

Chairman Bill Jenkins made a
motion to approve a bid by Clark
Lift in the amount of $18,190 for
a forklift for the Water and Sewer
Department.
Anderson seconded the
motion, which was approved
unanimously.
The board followed a recom
mendation from the Parks and
Recreation Department, and unan
imously rejected all bids for the
proposed lighting system for the
fields at Bennett Park.
After receiving two bids for

neither teenager was wearing a
seat belt.
Cooly was treated and
released from Baptist North
Hospital. He remains out of jail
on bond.
District Attorney Phil Smith
said he would not discuss the
case at the request of the vic
tim’s family.
Cooly also was indicted for
driving with an open container
of beer.
A grand jury returned a total
of 30 indictments on Monday.

$33,600.
Kieffer made the motion to
allow the bid on a 60-day sched
ule. Anderson seconded the

The additional expenditure was
approved by a 4-1 vote, with
Bennett voting against the motion
offered by Kieffer.
Bennett objected because the

Thirty years ago, Hurricane
Camille produced 190 mph
winds, making it the second
strongest storm ever recorded.
By 5 p.m. on Sept. 14, Floyd
had developed winds of up to
140 mph.
Here at home, folks with
loved ones close to the storm
have been concerned for their
safety. Local resident J.J. Seay
has a sister, Kris, at Armstrong
State College in Savannah. He
said she had evacuated to
Warner Robins, but to “keep
them in your prayers.”

involved in the efforts to help

change order was a 10 percent
increase over the original amount,
with the plans already approved
by an architect. He also objected
to the six week approval time for
building plans.
The commission also acted on
the zoning proposal from Rex
Gravitt, Bobby Garren and Kenny
Coleman. The application was
approved with conditions by the
board. The proposal called for
property off Holly Cove Road
near Pilgrim Road to be rezoned
from Al (agricultural), to R 3
(multi-family residential).
Anderson made the motion to
approve the condominiums with
several conditions attached,
including limiting the number of
those affected by Floyd. The
Hurricane Watch Team, a group
of 25 American Red Cross vol
unteers specially trained in dis
aster services, was on standby to
assist disaster victims.
This team includes five
Forsyth County residents,
among them Matt Aiken, Gene
Burch, Marvyn Glover and Ray
Umphenour.
