School bond
opposed by
Libertarians
By Jim Riley
Staff Writer
The Forsyth County Libertarian
Party has announced its opposi
tion to the $125 million school
bond issue which will be put
before voters in a referendum on
Tuesday. Sept. 21.
“Libertarians absolutely
believe that a good education is
important for every child,” said
President Bill Tepper. "But tax
ing residents who have lived in
the county for years to pay for
the growth brought about by
new residents is just plain
wrong.”
Tepper said he would like to
see more emphasis placed on
the parents of children actually
attending the schools than the
taxpayers.
This could possibly include a
"small tuition fee” to take some
of the burden off taxpayers that
do not have children who attend
Forsyth County Schools. “That
would be more of a free market
approach to education,” he
added. "We would see more par
ent participation.”
Not only does the group dis
agree with the bond issue in
principle, but members also take
issue with the substance of the
improvements. “The improve
ments that they are talking
about have nothing to do with
education,” Carol Warren stated
in a press release from the
Libertarians. “How is additional
brick veneer going to improve
test scores? What about new
tiles on the restroom floors?”
While state law specifically
prohibits impact fees from being
utilized for education.
Libertarians see them as a less
drastic alternative to zoning
moratoriums that could have
some growth-slowing benefits.
Impact fees would be assessed
against new developments to
offset infrastructure costs.
The Forsyth County
Commission has appointed a
committee to study the possibil
ity of implementing impact fees
in the future.

By Jim Riley

Former County Commissioner
Lamar Suddeth is recovering from
heart surgery after suffering a
heart attack over the Labor Day
weekend.
Suddeth had traveled to lowa to
attend the Old Thrashers Fair,
which includes the largest exhibits

Suddeth said the 100-degree heat
contributed to the attack.
After surgery and a brief stay in
an lowa hospital, Suddeth is
recovering at home and working
out of his office.
“I’m just taking it easy," Suddeth
said.
Suddeth served on the Forsyth
County Commission from January
1995 to December 1998. He
served as vice-chairman for a por
tion of that time.

road one time, state Sheriff’s Office reports.
The couple stopped at a shopping area on
Shadbum Road, where the deputy again
attempted to question them. The mate rider,
William Clay White, 43, of Cumming,
refused to get off the horse, state reports.
The officer found a half-empty bottle of
Seagram's whiskey in White's possession. He

The woman rider was identified as Angela
Dianne Wood. 35. of Cumming.

and refused to take a breath test.
Both White and Wood were charged with
public drunkenness and obstruction. White
also was charged with loitering and prowling.
The owner of Kid’s Komer told authorities
he did not notice any damage to the daycare
center.
