an outstanding musical in May. “Dr. Newhart’s Neck-up Check

Prior to their departure, they were given a “neck-up check-up”

June is a very important month
to country music star Bill
Anderson. The highlight of the
month for the people of north
Georgia will be the City Lights
Festival 2000 June 20-30 in
Commerce.
Plans call for a Thursday night
dinner at the Commerce Civic
Center featuring a “meet-and
greet” session with Anderson, fel
low Opry members Jim Ed Brown
and Helen Cornelius. In addition
to mingling with the crowd and
being available for autographs and
photos, all three are expected to
pick-n-sing during a “jam ses
sion” following dinner.
“The fans really seem to be
rallying behind this year’s event.”
Anderson says. “My email is
flooded with folks wanting infor
mation about the festival and
everywhere I go there are people
talking about it. I’ve even heard
about a lady coming in from the
Bahamas. Her name is Olga
Bethel and I understand she
ordered tickets after hearing me
mention the event on TV during
Opry Backstage.”
He speaks to all major Christian
denominations and has given inspirational
speeches to dozens of major national
businesses including Chick-fil-A,
Mary Kay, Home Interiors, Jockey
International, and others.
More than 750,000 people come to
learn from him each year.

City Lights Festival 2000 is
now in its fourth year and was
originally created in 1997 as a cel
ebration to honor the 40th
Anniversary of WJJC Radio
where Anderson once worked as a
DJ.
The singer showed up to do a
concert for his alma mater and,
much to his surprise, found they
were naming a street after him.
The gesture moved Anderson so
much that he offered to make the
event an annual affair if the city
would turn it into a benefit for
families in the area.
His wish quickly became a
reality with monies going toward
restoration of the 100-year-old
Cultural Center in downtown
Commerce in 1998. •'
The next year it evolved into
an annual event to benefit the
development of a Bill Anderson
Center for Performing Arts on the
campus of Commerce High
School.
A Friday night concert at the
high school will feature Anderson
and his Po’ Folks Band, plus spe
cial guests Connie Smith, Brad
Paisley, and Georgia’s own
singing Jordan’s. The show will

Immediately after the concert,
a spectacular fireworks display
will follow to conclude City

To those who attended the last
two City Lights festivals, the
event is not just a concert. It is an
opportunity for the fans to let
Anderson and the stars know how
much they are appreciated.
Anderson also makes the most of
this opportunity to visit the folks
who knew him before he was
famous.
Last year, more than 5,000
people attended the concert and
Anderson stayed until the early
morning to visit with them.
Afterward, for the fans it was a
trip home for a long rest.
For Anderson, it was a bus trip
back to Nashville for a Saturday
evening appearance on “Grand

different” on this CD with the
most obvious difference being his
decision “not to use any electrical
instruments ... offering, instead, a
total acoustic sound ... resulting in
a refreshing departure, to say the
least.”
Recorded at Sony/ATV
Studios in Nashville, “A Lot of
Things Different” also lets this
consummate entertainer shine in
the producer’s spotlight, which he
shares with engineer-musician
Rex Schnelle.
Together, they have created 10
cuts of pure performance magic
from country music’s only
Whisperin’ Wordsmith.
Two records from his past are
on the CD, namely “When Two
Worlds Collide,” which Anderson
co-wrote with his friend Roger
Miller, in the backseat of a Nash
Rambler while traveling on-the
road together in 1961, and “A
Death in the Family,” which
Anderson composed in 1969 and
was originally recorded by Little
Jimmy Dickens on Decca
Records.
