Q: In all the reports of the upcoming
fall season, I never saw a complete list of
the shows that will not be coming back.
Can you provide such a list? -Mark S.,
Flint, Mich.
A: I’ll try. Here’s a list by network:
ABC: Boy Meets World; It’s Like,
You Know ...; Odd Man Out; Snoops;
Oh Grow Up; Sports Night; Talk to Me;
Then Came You; Wasteland;
Wonderland.
CBS: Cosby, Chicago Hope, Falcone,
Grapevine, Ladies Man (which may
return midseason), Love and Money,
Martial Law, Now and Again, Winning
Lines, Work With Me and the popular

find the right words to describe
Nicole Kidman’s costume at the
Hollywood premiere of “M:I-2.” The
top had no back, no sides and very
little front just enough to cover
her female accoutrements. This was
held up by a halter neck. Then came
about six inches of bare flesh show
ing her navel, and then a pair of
black silk pants. Granted, Nicole has
a bod that bears baring, but this was
a bit much.
Those naughty little gremlins
have been at it again. This time I
wrote that the Warren Beattys had
named their new baby girl Ella. The
imps danced around on the letters
and it came out as Elie. Little Miss
Beatty’s full name is Ella Elizabeth.
And while we're on the subject of
new names, remember Estella

very fine actress. We shall see.
Aside to Polly H. of Scarsdale,

Scarwid. She was excellent as Joan
Crawford’s daughter in “Momrnie
Dearest” and then her career just sort
of went kerplonk. But, she has
recently surfaced in a cable film with
James Woods and Craig T. Nelson
titled “Dirty Pictures.” Diana is a
good actress. She just lacks that little
bit of magic that makes a movie star.
The Phil Bronsteins have two
homes. His is in San Francisco,
where they live when Sharon Stone
is not working, and hers is in Beverly
Hills where she stays when she is.
Then, they had one left over. High in
the Hollywood Hills on famed
Mulholland Drive this one went
unused, so Sharon sold it for just
under a million bucks and is now
having a ball with her booty.

there. It was packed with cars.
Suddenly, a teeny baby squirrel
hopped off the curb and proceeded to
try to cross the street. I couldn't
believe what I was seeing, but every
car came to a dead stop and waited

Review
BY DNA SMITH
Mission: Impossible 2
Right off the bat let me just say that
John Woo is one of my favorite directors.
His film, “Hard Boiled,” is without a doubt,
the ‘Citizen Kane” of Hong Kong action
movies.
Unfortunately, Woo's latest flick, “M:I
--2” is also a Tom Cruise summer block
buster, which means Woo had to lock horns
with a big star and a studio that wanted to
bring in the largest and most diverse audi
ence possible and the resulting movie is
a frustrating compromise.
The first 20 minutes and the final 20
minutes of “M:I-2” are brilliant, breathtak
ing and pure Woo. The studio wisely chose
clips from those parts to use in the trailer
so, if you’ve seen any of the commercials
or previews for the film, you’ve already
seen many of its best bits.
The middle hour and twenty minutes
are a bore. They should’ve named this part
“Mission: Interminable.” There aren’t any
real action sequences to speak of. Instead,
the middle two-thirds of the movie are
spent trying to convince us that Tom Cruise
is in love with a burglar (played by Thandie
Newton). Sadly, the romantic subplot fails
to convince anyone.
The plot of “M:I-2,” in case you care,
involves a rogue IMF agent (Dougray
Scott) who steals the antidote to a killer
virus. Cruise, along with Newton and a
two-man IMF team rush to acquire the
virus and the antidote before Scott can
unleash a plague on Australia.
The plot twist is that Newton is the ex
girlfriend of bad-guy Scott. Cruise is
ordered to use her as bait to flush out the
villain. Along the way, Cruise falls in love
with her and she with him. And as I said
above, no one in the audience fell for it
The forced romantic subplot is only one
of many holes in the movie’s Story, though.
And, usually, in an action movie/summer
blockbuster, these are to be expected. If the
film does well, the gaping plot holes are
often overlooked For example, there were
several plot holes and slow parts in
“Gladiator,’’ but the film was done so well,
I didn't care—it was pure fun. Not so with
“M:l-2.”
Bottom Line: Don’t get suckered in by
this movie’s slick trailer. But if you
absolutely HAVE to see this movie, check
it out at a matinee, wait for it to hit the dol
lar theater or wait for it to be released on
video. It’s not worth paying full price to
see.
