Kings, Killer Bees wrap up roller titles
By Eric Burden
Sports Writer
There were two, make that three, hockey cham
pionships captured last weekend.
At Cumming’s Slapshots, the Killer Bees
swarmed the Sabres 4-2 to claim the spring edition
of the Slapshots Cup in the 8- to 10-year-old divi
sion while the Kings overruled the Flyers 4-1 to nail
down the 11- to 13-year-old title.
Oh, yeah, and the New Jersey Red Devils ousted
the Dallas Stars 2-1 in Game Six to win the Stanley
Cup.
But those guys just beat each other up until the
puck bounces in. No real skill involved there.
To witness stickhandling and net-tending at its
finest, a true hockey fan needed to see the Kings’
Jayson “I Guarantee It” Garrity tailor a hat trick and
his teammate, goalie Eric “Suds” Sudnikovich,
almost white-wash the Flyer-by shooting.
For their performances, local roller hockey nobil
ity knighted Garrity MVP and bestowed on Suds the
title Best Goalie of the Playoffs.
After the Kings dispatched Sean Spade, the divi
sion’s No. 3 scorer, and the Wolverines in the semi
finals, Garrity was an unexpected candidate to
power the Kings’ offense in the championship game.
But Garrity, the team’s fifth-leading scorer and 16th
overall in the division, stepped into the gap when the
Flyers, who handed the Kings their only loss of the
regular season, handcuffed King teammates
Anthony Davis and Michael Chihlas. The No. 2 and
No. 4 scorers in the division, Davis and Chihlas
combined for 44 goals during the season, and the
Flyers were determined to not let the two beat them.
That strategy worked, but left the door open for
Garrity’s counterattack. Flyer defenseman Stephen
Simon did yeoman’s work to shut down the Davis-
Chihlas attack. Without the division’s leading scorer,
Taylor Sexton, a 27-goal shooter, to jet-start the
Flyer offense, Simon covered that end of the floor,
too, sticking in the only Flyer goal on assists by the
Skinner clan, Gary and Megan.
For his sacrifice of body and soul above and
beyond the call of duty, Simon garnered Best
Defensive Player honors.
Davis still slipped in one goal to finish with 23
on the season and bent the knee and bowed the head
to be crowned Best Offensive Player of the Playoffs.
In the 8- to 10-year-old title match, Garrett
Breinich took Best Offensive Player with a two-goal
performance while his teammate Jacob Butler
banged in another and scooped up Game MVP.
Butler and Breinich finished one-two in the Top Gun
scorer’s race, Butler collecting 26 goals, three
assists and Breinich 15 goals, 11 assists.
Louis Sarris added another goal for the Bees.
To protect their undefeated season, the Bees had

MLS Camp
If anyone has a child registered for
the 9 a.m.-noon session of camp, please
consider moving to a session from 5-8
p.m. in the evening.
The program will be the same, with
the same coaches. Also, we are still
looking for three families to host coach
es. This is a great opportunity to expose
your family to enjoying a young man or
woman from another country, who has
a love of soccer. It’s a great experience
for everyone in the family.
The coaches clinic will be from 6-9
p.m. June 27 and is free.
There will also be a clinic for adults

Sporting terms are often more than meets the eye
A lady friend found a list of sports terms and their
definitions in a particular publication this week and
brought the list to my attention. She noted she wasn’t
familiar with sports terminology and that most
females probably didn’t know a balk from a run-bat
ted-in.
Following are a few explanations of some of the
more common sports terms we see in newspapers
during these hot summer months.
However, as is the case with hundreds of words in
the English language, many mean different things to
different people. The first definition is the accepted
sports term while the second lists another meaning...
Fishing
Angler slang term for a fisherman OR the new
guy who takes your daughter out on a date without
telling you at which movie theatre they can be found.
Bait used to tempt fish to bite OR the dishes
you washed in order to get your wife in a good mood
before you tell her you ran over her azaleas with the
lawnmower.
Hook there are five types of hooks; short,
shank, medium shank, long shank, up-eyed and barb
'less OR a sixth, the apparatus on which meat hangs
'that your wife chases you with when she sees her
azalea bushes.
Sinker —a weight at the end of the fishing line to
hold the line still and low in the water OR what fat
people (like me) become when they try to swim more
than 20 yards.

to reverse the Ryerse trend on the Sabres. Brothers
James (18 goals) and Jon (12 goals, five assists) held
the No. 4 and 5 scoring spots in the division and
threatened to sully the unblemished reputation of the
Bees.
The Bees were halfway successful, shutting out
James, but unable to snuff out Jon. awarded Best
