Q: I could handle hearing about most
of the shows that won’t be back next fall,
but it broke my heart to learn that, after
four years of loyal watching, I won’t
have any closure on The Pretender! Any
chance of a wrap-up TV movie, as NBC
did with Homicide: Life on the Street? -
Peggy S., Montgomery, Ala.
A: For the past several weeks, I’ve
been hearing off-the-record reports that a
couple of TV outlets may be interested
in doing one or more Pretender TV
movies with Michael T. Weiss and his
original colleagues.
JILL JACKSON'S
HOLLYWOOD
HOLLYWOOD ... “Autumn in
New York” is a lovely movie.
Richard Gere and Winona Ryder
serve up sensitive and provocative
performances that make for a typical
old-fashioned love story. New York
is fantastically photographed and
never looked more excitingly beauti
ful. It’s not a film for those who go
for car chases, shootings and vio
lence. Better they should get over to
“Godzilla 2000” which isn’t full of
shootings and car chases, but sure
has its share of excitement.
Whichever you may choose, there is
certainly something out there for
everybody.
LOVE DEPARTMENT: It’s defi

Unfortunately, various spokespeople
report that no firm commitment exists as
of this writing. Watch this space for
updates.
“We are very grateful to all the loyal
and as for Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben
Affleck, I dunno. However, I do
know all seems to be well again with
Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid (as I
write this) ... And, yes, even though
they are politically opposed she
an avid Democrat and he an equally
avid Republican Maria Shriver
and Arnold Schwarzenegger have a
great marriage. Possibly, the rule
goes in their house as in mine:
Politics and religion are NOT dis
cussed. Peace at any price!
Would you believe that somebody
would pay $50,000 per month to
rent a house? That’s what Ted
Danson and Mary Steenburgen are
paying for a manse in Malibu. BUT
they have only taken it for three
months. The Dansons have been
happily wed since 1995 when every
one thought them a most unlikely
couple and felt it would never last.

Q: Two oh-so-knowledgeable friends
of mine have had a heated dispute with
me for several years now, and I hope you
can settle it Was the show Bonanza ever
shown under the title Ponderosa? I say
no, and would love to be right! -Rose
Heimann, Inverness, Fla.
A: Sony, Rose, but your friends arc
right
During the summer of 1972, when
Bonanza was still running Sundays on
NBC, the network carried Tuesday
reruns from previous seasons under the
title Ponderosa. That fall. Bonanza itself
moved to Tuesdays for what would be its
last truncated season, ending in January.
Q: What was the name of the show
starring Adrian Pasdar (Mysterious
Ways) as a guy getting revenge on peo
ple who had abused him as a child? As
an adult he slept naked in a cardboard
“cool breeze over mountains.”
Keanu’s dad is Chinese-American;
his mother is English, and he was
bom in Beirut. For his role in “The
Replacements,” he packed on 20
pounds, hung around football prac

ble in the picture.

A: That was Profit, a brilliant black
comedy that aired for less than a month
in the spring of 1996 on Fox. Pasdar
starred as Jim Profit, a totally amoral
young executive, in this complex series,
which frequently leavened its drama
with macabre laughs. Despite dazzling
reviews, the show never found an audi
ence on Fox.
Q: Did an actor named Olan Soule
play the father of the Darling clan on
The Andy Griffith Show? Is he still
alive? And was that Peggy McCay of
Days of Our Lives playing Andy’s old
sweetheart on a show about his class
reunion? -Eleanor S. Flower, Ottawa, 111.
A: Soule, a veteran character actor
who died in 1994, had a recurring role as
a character named John Masters on The
Andy Griffith Show. Denver Pyle, who
died in 1997, played Briscoe Darling.
And yes, that was McCay of Days as
Andy’s old sweetheart.

Q. I was very upset to learn thai
Robert Downey, Jr., who was convict
ed on a drug dealing charge, was lei
out of prison early. That’s the problen:
with how the law handles celebrities
Has anyone explained why he got out?
Maria M.
A. Downey was not convicted of
drug dealing. He served a year foi
drug possession. That’s a very impor
tant distinction.
Downey’s release is conditional
He must continue in drug rehabilita
tion or he could be returned to the sys
tern. He was also counseled to go back
to work as part of his rehab, and that’s
just what he’s doing. You’ll see him in
several episodes on the Fox series,
“Ally Mcßeal” (the last report was
eight). He’ll play what the show pub
licists describe as “a mysterious
stranger with a knack for understand
ing Ally.”
Q. I keep writing to you for Doris
Day’s address, and you never respond.
I think you would want to treat your
readers better, Evelyn. Richard McG.
A. I’ve noted several times in this
column that we never, NEVER, ever
give out any addresses. So, please, do
not write to me with that request.
Thank you.
Q. I would love to know more
about John Edward, who has a gift for
contacting people who have died.
Where was he bom? How old is he?
And when did he know he had this
gift? Also, has anyone managed to
find out if he gets any of his informa
tion ahead of time? Christina L.
A. The 30-year-old native of Long
Island, N.Y., now has his own show,
“Crossing Over with John Edward” on
the Sci Fi channel. He has said that he
could always “sense” the presence of
people who died just by thinking
about them or when people are talking
about them. He wrote a book called
“One Last Time” which earned him an
appearance on “Larry King Live."
That night, the CNN switchboard was
almost blown out.
Edward insists he gets no advance
information. Some skeptics say he
speaks in generalities to which his
subjects would
respond.
