I Good study habits are the key
to keeping up your grades
i by Kelly Milner Halls
What’s the best way to celebrate
School Success Month? By
making the grade, of course. Sound
too hard to handle? Unless you’re a
kid genius (and who is?), scoring As
and Bs means work. But according to
[ experts, it may not be as tough as
f you think.
“If you improve your study habits,
improving your grades will be easier;’’
says Leslie Quattlebaum, assistant to
De John Edgerly at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Counseling and Psychological Services
I Department. Edgerly is a “study
smart” whiz.
1) Make a list
Where do you begin? With a list,
Edgerly says. “Make a list of all the
things you have to do. Break it down
into smaller chunks.” That makes it
easier to get started and to check off
your accomplishments as you go.
2) Hard, then easy
Once you’ve made the list, do the
difficult tasks first, Edgerly says. It’s
natural to gravitate toward fun or
easy assignments before you take on
brain scramblers. But think about it:
Even fun homework tires you out. So
if you take on the tough stuff last, you
do it with less energy, when you really
need more.
3) Study space
Make a space just for studying.
Sure, you LIKE studying in front of
the TV or in bed, but why do it if
you don’t do it right? “Your body
knows where you are,” says a study
expert at the University of California
at Berkeley. “When you use the same
place to study, day after day, your
body becomes trained. You will
focus your concentration more
quickly [there].”
4) Snack
Don’t try to study on an empty
stomach. If you’re hungry, you’ll be
distracted, says the National
Education Association. So grab an
apple or some carrot sticks. Just avoid
dairy products, which tend to be nat
ural sedatives.
5) No distractions
Avoid distractions when you try to
study. “Turn off the stereo,” says the
UC Berkeley expert. “Many students
insist they study better with music,
and that may be true [for some]. But
the overwhelming majority of research
says silence is the best form of music
for study.”
>
6) Study buddy
Avoid distractions, but don’t over
look the value of a study partner.
“Quiz each othei; compare notes and
practice testing,” Edgerly says. Not
only are two heads better than one,
but you also can help one another
i avoid getting too bored.
7) Writ* It down
Experts agree that the more senses
you use to absorb information, the
better you’ll remember it. So don’t
just read about what you’re trying to
learn. Write down a few of the key
facts. That uses your sense of touch
AND sight.
8) Rost
Avoid mental exhaustion, say the
experts at UC Berkeley. Take short
breaks during study sessions, and get
plenty of sleep once your studying is
through. Just before you go to sleep at
night, don’t think about academics.
Relax and unwind, mentally and
j physically. Otherwise, your sleep
r won’t refresh you.
9) Tako tho test
When it’s time to put your knowl
edge to use, don’t panic. “Find out
what kind of exam it will be,” Edgerly
says. Essay? Fill in the blanks? True or
false? Knowing what kind of test you
should study for helps you to prepare,
i Read your notes, practice your prob
e lems, then relax. If you’ve done your
best to study, you’ll do your best on
the quiz.
10) Lssrn from your
mistakes
If you don’t achieve your grade
goals, learn from it. Rework your
errors and try to understand why your
“correct answer” was not correct, UC
Berkeley experts say. And don't be
1 afraid to discuss your mistakes with
your teacher. After all, it’s his or her
job to make sure you learn all you need
to know at school. If you succeed, you
succeed as a team. If you fail, you can
work together to improve.
* Put down that video game! Turn
off the TV! It's time to study!
» by Elyse H., age 10,
1 Roswell, Georgia
c RJvery time your teacher says something like,
1 E“Listen to what lam saying,” or “This is
* important,” take notes on what she/he says.
1 Keep your notes neat and divided into sections.
When you get information, study it that
3 night. Find a quiet place to study, and get out
■ your class notes and textbooks, a couple of
3 sheets of paper and a pencil. First, re-read and
g take notes on the sections you read in class. Put
* the facts in your own words. When you are
j done, take your notes and read them, just as
■ you read a book. Go over them a second time.
* The third time, place your hand over the fact
and try to say it without looking. Don’t feel bad
3 if you can’t learn it right off the bat. Use this
1 method every single night until the test.
:J* Here are some more methods. Each night
1 you can use a different method, so studying
a won’t become boring.
» • Write down questions with their answers
and ask someone to orally quiz you.
a • Make flashcards! Use 3” x 5” index cards
J and write the question on one side and the
answer on the other.
f r • Take more time to study the harder parts
o of a certain subject.
Q Don’t forget: Take a snack break if you need
a. one, and reward yourself if you meet a study
* goal. Sometimes it’s good to take your mind
* off studying.
Now get off your computer and study!
| You’ve got a test soon! Good luck!
