Raiders
squelch
Dawgs
By Eric Burden
Sports Writer
What a difference a year
makes.
In its first game ever, the
Forsyth Central High volleyball
team tangled with the North
Forsyth squad, a team with a sea
son already under its belt, before
dropping a best-of-five match 4-
15,14-16,6-15.
“Even though most of our girls
have never played competitive
ball, we didn’t get spanked,” said
first-year Central coach Kathy
Gilbert. “It was good to see what
we’ve worked on in practice show
up on court under the stress of a
real game.
“We tried to slow the game
down and worked on using our
three hits and not falling back into
playing picnic ball. Os course, we
still went back to that more than
we should have, but we’re not
going to control the ball as much
as an experienced team like North
does.”
In the end, experience at the
net and the service line gave the
Lady Raiders the edge. After a
brief absence from the team,
senior Jennifer Gann served for 11
points in the third game while
senior Stenia Martin pumped in 10
points for the Lady Raiders in the
first game.
But North coach Jack “Gunny”
Snook wants to share the wealth a
little more.
“We’re still hurting in our ser
vice game,” Gunny said. “Right
now, we have to wait for only two
or three players to come up in the

The Big
Week No. 1 is past us, and
our newest member has
jumped out to an early lead.
Sports writer John Tooley,
happy to see the Buffalo Bills
win Sunday night, was even
happier to see himself pick
eight games correctly in his
first try as a Big 10 panelist.
Now the only remaining ques
tion is whether or not the new
guy can keep it up the rest of
the way.
The rest of us are all playing
catch-up.
This week’s college selec

choice games.
The pro games on our list
might cause a few of us to
scratch our heads a little more,
though.
So if you’re playing along at
home, keep tabs and see if you
can beat the new guy. If the
first week’s any indication,
though, it may be tough.

Though the Lady Bulldogs
have two players with some expe
rience, sisters Sandra, a senior, and
Ina Durdoric, a sophomore
exchange students from Croatia
there is a sharp drop-off after that.
Still against North, Gilbert saw
Central’s pieces start to fall into
place. At the service line, senior
Jennifer Perez picked up half of
the Lady Bulldogs offensive out
put in the three games, scoring 12
of their 24 points.
With a first-year team trying to
iron out the kinks, Gilbert realizes
a big thing is not letting frustration
hinder a team’s play and found a

“Amy Mohr and Brandy
Johnson are a couple of fireballs,”
Gilbert said. “Amy pulls the team
together when morale starts to sink
and Brandy’s a strong-willed play

the team focused."
Overall, the Lady Bulldogs
showed enough flashes of skill and
team play to keep hope alive.
“This is definitely starting from
scratch,” said Gilbert who played
volleyball at Berry College. “But
coming from not even knowing
what a bump pass was to contend

improvement.”

The Lady Raiders also turned
to their gloves to pull the win out
of West Hall’s bag, whipping off
five double plays. None of them

in the first. With bases loaded and
five runs already in for the Lady

up a grounder, stepped on the bag
and fired to first to end the attack.

Raiders were in danger of letting
West Hall get the last word in bat
wise. But five straight singles
moved North out to a 3-1 lead and
set the table for Bagley to clear
with her four-star dinger to left
field.
Perhaps the Lady Raiders
were too complacent after they
shut down Pickens on Tuesday
12-0, 13-0. Anna Shadburn and
Jodi McPherson combined for the
first shutout and then McPherson
and Elise Bush worked together
for the second Dragon whitewash.
