Cancer Institute.

What is a serving?

Experts: Driving skills can save your life
With traffic congestion grow
ing worse each year, the Metro
Atlanta Automobile Dealers
Association and its 150 franchised
new car and truck dealers would
like to offer you this refresher
course on driving safety
These following tips and basic
rules of the road will improve
your driving skills, knowledge
and manners to your fellow dn
vers.
Youi trip starts even before
you turn on your ignition
Here are some simple tips
before you begin your journey
• Don’t dunk and drive Half
ot all traffic fatalities are alcohol
related
With a blood alcohol level of
0 10, the legal limit for diunk dn
vers in Georgia, drivers are 12
times as likely to be in an accident
as nondnnking drivers
Similar odds face drivers on
drugs, including prescription
drugs and even over the countei
medications Even a slightly
impaired drivei is dangerous on
the road.
• Buckle up Safety belts
have proven to reduce chances of
serious injury or death in an acci
dent by 50 percent, according to
the National Highway traffic
Safety administration
Air bags and automatic seat
belts are not enough when it
comes to side and rollover crash
es.
Your lap and shoulder bells
can help save your life.
• Child safely The state ot
Georgia requires that all infants
and small children Ik restrained in
infant carriers, safety belts or, in
some cases, regular adult safely
seats These special seals or bells
should always be installed accord
mg to the manufacturer's inslruc
(ions.
• Making the necessary adjust
ments Make sure that die dn
ver’s seat, steering wheel, seal
bells, head restraints and rear and
side mirrors are positioned for
comfort, control and visibility
• Be mentally ready H
you’re fatigued or emotionally
upset, do not get behind the
wheel. Once you’re on the road,

Leading health authorities

better health.
The U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, the
U.S. Department of Agriculture,
and the national Academy of

Americans should eat a balanced
diet low in fat which includes lots
of fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables may

• Drive defensively Always

• Think, think, think Be on

Your eyes should Ik like radar,
constantly scanning between the

• Expect the unexpected
Always be on the lookout foi a

Always give yourself room to

around an emergency
• Be patient When traffic is
jammed, sit back, relax and think
positive thoughts
It may take you a little longer
than expected, but you’ll get
there.
Now last, but certainly not
least, are "Rules of the Road” that
you should always obey:
• Speed kills Always obey
the speed limits The faster you
go, tile less time you have to react
to emergencies, the harder you hit
and the greater your chances of
death or senous injuiy in an acci

merging lanes is always appieciat
ed by your fellow drivers
When H is then turn to merge/
let them in.
This simple act of courtesy is
the fastest and most logical way to
keep traffic moving at a steady
pace
• Failure to yield The yield
sign means what it says
It doesn’t mean hit the gas,
come to a complete stop or mus
cle your way into traffic.
If there is no yield sign, the
rules of the road dictate that cars
entering (Ik loadway always yield
to those on the loadway, and cars
making a lefthand turn must yield
to oik inning traffic.
At a four way stop, the first
one to arrive has the right of way
Otherwise, yield to the car on
your right
• Ignoring red lights and stop
signs Illis is (he most basic
rule of driving If ignored, you
could Ik responsible tor a serious
accident.
A ted light solid or blinking
or slop sign means slop com
plelely.
A yellow light means caution.
It does not mean accelerating to
push your way through an inter
section
There are many more driving
safety rules to observe than tlxisc
mentioned above, and every one
ot these rules are important to
your well being, as well as that ot
youi family and fellow motorists
