Pritchett against discharge into Lanier

Forsyth County Commissioner-elect A.J.
Pritchett opposes discharging wastewater into Lake
Lanier and offered what he said is a better idea dur
ing the Aug. 30 meeting of the Clean Water
Initiative Committee of the Greater Atlanta
Chamber of Commerce.
Pritchett said he will also introduce the plan
after he takes office in January. It calls for construc
tion of “blending reservoirs” to receive treated
effluent from wastewater plants. The water would
then be mixed with water from Lake Lanier or the
Chattahoochee Basin and piped back to a water
treatment facility for further refining before being
recycled as drinking water.
Pritchett said his plan would benefit the entire
region.
‘Tor one thing, it guarantees you will not have a
bad discharge into the lake,” he said. “And, because
you are recirculating clean water back into the
water supply, the need to replace so much water is
less.”
But Gwinnett County is already moving forward
with its own proposal to pump up to 40 million gal
lons per day of treated wastewater from its new
North Advanced Water Reclamation Facility back
into the lake.
Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Wayne
Hill scoffed at Pritchett’s plan.
“I hope that Forsyth County will show us how to
do it,” said Hill. “I hope they will show us the way.

[Pritchett] is just trying to get the people on Lake
Lanier off his back."
Pritchett called Hill's remarks “a copout.” He
added, “They are the ones who are in the immediate
process of getting approval to discharge wastewater
into the lake.”
Lake Lanier Association President Jackie Joseph
applauded the plan, calling it “an excellent idea.”
She added: “It’s the only way to go. We don’t
have the luxury to do anything else. It is ludicrous
to think we should use Lake Lanier as a reservoir.
That’s what Gwinnett is doing, using it as a blend
ing reservoir.”
Pritchett’s idea apparently appeals to some coun
ty commissioners.
“I think it has some merit,” said District 3
Commissioner Michael Bennett. “His is a common
sense approach. I’m in favor of not having to dump
in the lake if we don’t have to do it.”
Bennett added, however, he is skeptical about
getting the approval of the federal government.
“Local governments don’t control these things
anymore," he said. “Our wise fathers in Washington
do. They think they know more about these local
issues than we do.”
District 1 Commissioner John Kieffer said, “I
certainly think it is worth going the next step to
evaluate it further. But I have mixed feelings as to
whether it can be implemented.”
Kieffer said he wants to know the cost of such a
plan and whether there would be enough water flow
from the creeks and streams to provide the capacity
for a mixing pond.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s

Investigators and company offi

the robbery last Friday.
The suspects were only
described as an African-American

be in their 20s.
No arrests had been made in the
case as of late last week.

Discovery of envelope leads to
Florida man’s arrest for forgery
By Colby Jon—

An anonymous package led to
the Aug. 30 arrest of a Florida
man for forgery.
A deputy with the Forsyth
County Sheriff’s Office reported
finding an envelope containing a
driver’s license and Social
Security card on his patrol car
shortly before midnight.
Included in the package was an

The county’s strongest advocate for the rights of
the disabled, especially in terms of access to public
and private facilities and businesses, is dead at age
41.
Linda Stinson died Thursday following an illness
and a memorial service was held Saturday at 7 p.m.
in the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. Her obituary is
on Page 2A.
Stinson was active in local politics and followed
her motto: “Handicapped from the neck down, not
the neck up.” She made two unsuccessful bids for the
state House and was often a speaker before the
Forsyth County Commission on community issues
and the rights of the disabled.
She wrote a poem in 1983 that expressed her feel
ings. In part, it stated, “1 love going out even though
people stare/It really doesn’t bother me that I’m in a
wheelchair/I admit that at first, I just couldn’t under
stand/Why God hadn’t touched me with his healing
hand/But soon I realized that there was more than
being able to walk/For God has blessed me with a
good mind and the ability to talk.”
Stinson also worked to provide in-home care for
disabled persons because she believed in indepen
dence rather than having a person sent to a nursing
home.
She was a member of the county commission's

“real” name and alleging the man
was selling drugs and staying at
the Sun Suites in Cumming.
Police questioned the man,
identified as 59-year-old Larry
Olsson of Miami, at the hotel.
Olsson told police he got the fake
identification to obtain the title to
a 1995 Ford F-150 truck he was
trying to buy for S3OO. He added
that he used a Tennessee man’s

Disability Advisory Board and often worked with
county officials to make sure public buildings pro
vided access for the disabled.
Stinson also was regularly sought out by local
businesses that wanted information about accessibili
ty in terms of their buildings.
Family members say her favorite song was the
rock ballad, “Free Bird.” Stinson will always be
remembered as a person who never failed to smile,
whatever the situation or challenge ahead.
The community mourns the loss of Linda
Stinson.

Olsson’s real driver’s license
was revoked in Florida, according
to police.
Olsson is charged by the
Cumming Police Department with
two counts of first-degree forgery

He was released from custody
