Mashburn Elementary
kindergarteners learning
the wonders of the Internet
By Sandy Beck
For the Forsyth County News
Kim Ransbotham’s kindergarten class at
Mashburn Elementary is already showing it is part of
the “wired generation” that will have no memory of
a life without the Internet.
Ransbotham has two students check the weather
every morning on the CNN weather site and report to
the class during group time.
She has found the best way for the students to get
introduced to the computer is to have “each one
teach one.”
Simply put, this means she starts out showing the
first two students and they teach the next two, and
this continues until everyone can complete the task.
This frees the teacher to work with other students.
This fall every elementary school will have at
least four computers per classroom, as well as three
portable carts with 10 laptops each.
The carts allow for the computers to be used as a
teaching tool integrated within the classroom rather
than having the students perceive technology as a

“subject” instead of as a tool.
Each teacher has been given a laptop loaded with
all of the system’s software and a connection to the
Internet, allowing them to participate in “anytime,
anywhere learning."
With a teacher’s busy schedule, a weekend
moment might provide the best time to become
familiar with a piece of software or surf the Internet
for curriculum sites.
The laptops can also be used for teaching in the
classroom, using a converter that puts the informa
tion on a 27-inch television screen.
An example of classroom integration in kinder
garten, after a study of shapes, might be using the
digital camera to take pictures of shapes found
around the school, import the pictures into Kid Pix
and have the students write a description their shape.
This provides, extends and enriches the curriculum
for the students.
