ed gradually through their fear.
Kurth sometimes uses hypnosis to
get to the root of the fear.
“In a state of hypnosis, people
have been able to go back to the
event that triggered the fear. They
are able to look at their thoughts
and anxieties and see if there was
any logic to it,” Kurth explained.
“The difference between anxiety
and a phobia is that anxiety is irra
tional.
“Take, for example, a fear of
dogs. If you were bitten two or
three times by a dog, you may
develop a phobia. If you’ve never
been bitten by a dog, or never
encountered a dog and yet you’re
afraid of them, that’s an anxiety
because it’s irrational.”
Phobias are constant. There is
no beginning, middle or end. It’s
always there.
Anxiety/panic attacks are
episodic in nature there is a
beginning when the person is
starting to get upset, a middle with
full-blown physical symptoms and
an end when the person feels bet
ter.
Depression often accompanies
anxiety.
“With anxiety, you’re anxious
about some area of your life,
whether it’s dogs, insects, driving
or something else,” Kurth added.
“You can’t do normal things
because of this fear. Society tells
you you should be able to do it.
When you can’t, depression sets
There are two types of depres
sion long-term and situational.
“Situational depression is
treated well with short-term anti
depressants, until life gets back to
normal,” Kurth continued. “Long
term depression usually requires
medication and sometimes hospi
talization.”
Symptoms of depression
include feeling sad, fatigue, diffi
culty sleeping, feelings of hope
lessness, losing interest in things,
trouble concentrating and getting
headaches for no reason.
Approximately 38 million peo
ple are affected by anxiety and
depression. They frequently feel
they are the only person on earth
that this happens to. Friends and
family may not acknowledge that
their symptoms are real. It does
not discriminate by social or eco
nomic class. Sometimes, symp
toms of anxiety or depression are
mistaken for another medical ill
ness and go undiagnosed.

“In some cases, it’s a matter of
testing to make sure the diagnosis
is correct. There is always a
chance of a faulty diagnosis,” cau
tioned Kurth.
Without the correct diagnosis,
correct treatment is not possible.
Some people are afraid or
ashamed or don’t know enough
about anxiety and depressive dis
orders to put a name to the feel
ings and symptoms they experi
ence. National Anxiety Disorders
Screening Day is a program for
individuals to get answers to these
puzzling problems.
The ABT Clinic has no
patients scheduled on May 2 so
they can focus on providing the
free screening to the members of
the community. No appointment is
necessary, but do allow at least an
hour for the screening.

on the wmlb.com site. “It was
comforting to know there was a
station that played the type of
music I am passionate about. I
also appreciate the station’s sup

music of other local and regional
musicians. The loss of the format
is a personal loss and a loss to the
Americana music community. The
significant contribution the folks
at WMLB made to the Americana
music scene lingers despite [the
change.]”
Others are not so calm.
“I am so-o-o disappointed to
hear that you’re gone and that the
new owners haven’t the good
sense to keep the best ever station
going ...” says Gail Tuten. “This
pretty much does it for good
music in Atlanta. We really need
another worn out oldies station.
What are these people thinking?
Oh yeah, money. Why can’t
money be made playing good
music?”
Why, indeed?
Nancy Johnson, longtime pro

though everyone was apparently
listening, few were advertising
and contributing to the station’s
bottom line.

dened by the change, Johnson
says she’s not particularly sur
prised.
“Everybody was listening, but
nobody was advertising. Now, I’m
getting inundated with calls from
folks who miss it. Even yuppie
sounding people from Atlanta
were calling and saying they
would miss it all, including the
funeral announcements.”
Without a doubt, the station’s
local programming attracted some
of the most devoted fans and, now,
they are particularly vocal.
“They all miss the swap shop
and even the Georgia Network
News,” says Johnson of recent lis
tener feedback. “And, then, of
course, there are those who are
devastated to lose their source of
Americana and classic greats. I
don’t know if Americana’s ever
going to be huge. But if you think
about Johnny Cash and Wilie
Nelson never getting air play, it
does seem wrong.”
“Right now, I think it’s such an
important time for Americana
because of the soundtrack to the
movie Oh Brother Where Art
Thou?” says Johnson. “It is acous
tic, old-time bluegrass music and
has gone platinum. The sound
track went to number one for
weeks on the country sales charts.

Now, when listeners tune in to
1170 AM and its new simulcast
“twin,” 1160 AM, they will hear
oldies music from the ’sos
through the ’7os. The combined
stations have applied to the FCC
to boost 1160 AM’s signal from
10,000 watts to 50,000 watts, a
mega leap in the radio broadcast
ing world.
“WKGE/1160’s signal, as I
understand it, couldn’t be boosted
with 1170 in such close range,”
explains Johnson. “Or unless you
reduce the power of 1170. A
50,000 watt is an extremely strong
signal and will be one of the
strongest AM signals around. It’s
a real smart move. It’s progress
and we hate it. A lot of listeners
have expressed what a shame it is,
because the people who’d been
here forever thought of it as their
hometown station.”
