Special
payments
an error
correction
Most Social Security bene
ficiaries received a special pay
ment in mid-July. The payment
is compensation for a con
sumer price index error made
by the Bureau of Labor
Statistics.
The error affected calcula
tions for the cost-of-living
adjustment for the year 2000,
and beneficiaries received a 2.4
percent increase instead of a
2.5 percent.
Individuals who get Supp
lemental Security Income of
Special Veterans Benefits will'
also get a special one-time
payment. Everybody due a
payment got one automatically.
For most of the 45 million
Social Security and six million
SSI beneficiaries, the amount
of the payment was between
sl2 and sl9, covering benefits’
paid from January 2000
through July 2001. The short
fall for the majority of benefi
ciaries was $1 per month.
Regular monthly payments,
if affected, were adjusted
beginning with the payment
received in August 2001.
Beneficiaries received a
written explanation of their
one-time payment and an
explanation about their adjust
ed monthly benefit by mid-
July.
Social Security will com
pute the shortfall for everyone,
even those who have died since
January 2000. If Social Secur
ity’s records indicate an eligi
ble survivor, Social Security
will send the payment to the
survivor in September.
If you believe you are enti
tled to a payment on behalf of
a deceased relative, but do not
receive one automatically, con
tact Social Security at (800)
772-1213.
