Bulldogs beat Pickens, 67-61
Forsyth Central girls come up short against Lady Dragons
By Travis M. Chaffin
Sports Editor
Kurt Koeplin has reason to
smile.
His Forsyth Central boys
basketball team defeated
Pickens County Tuesday night
67-61 to put their record in
Region 7-AAA at 2-1 tying
them with South Forsyth for
second place.
Scoring only nine points in
the first quarter, the Bulldogs
(2-3, 2-1) found themselves
trailing by 13 in the second
and knew they were in trouble
if their game did not pick up.
“We started out ice, ice
cold offensively in the first
quarter,” Koeplin admitted.
But by halftime, the
Bulldogs had made the neces
sary adjustments and cut the
Dragon lead to five, 32-27 in
Pickens’ favor.
“Once we did that, I knew
that the game was ours,” he
said. “Even though we were
losing, I knew the game was
ours because I saw how tired
they were getting.”
In the second half, Forsyth
Central pulled back on the
full-court pressure as Pickens
(1-6, 0-3) was doing a decent
job breaking in.
“We just got after them in
the half-court and that made a
big difference because they
were really sucking wind try-

Amy Mohr, No. 10, scored 17 points against Pickens County on Tuesday.
RAIDERS from IB
only allowed 50 points and
lias seven shutouts this season,
including last week’s 49-0
defeat of Hart County in
Hartwell.
“The real challenge is
going to come to our offensive
line,” Miller said.
“They are quick up front
and their linebackers are very
active.”
Miller said the Raider O
iine has to be determined to
move the football, even if it’s
just three yard at a time to get
first downs.
“Our offensive line has got

ing to find shots,” Koeplin
said.
Then the Bulldogs took
control of the game with a 1 fl
point run that gave them a SO
-47 lead by the end of the third
quarter.
Koeplin said Pickens’
record is deceiving, adding
that Tuesday’s game against
Central was the first time all
the Dragons had all their play
ers back at full health.
“They’re going to be in the
top four in our region, fighting
it out,” he predicted.
Despite heavy defensive
coverage by Pickens, Jason
Fulwood was the Bulldogs’
leading scorer with 15 points,
followed by sophomore Judd
Gravitt’s nine points. Nine out
of the 11 Bulldogs on the
court Tuesday put points on
the scoreboard.
Beau Mason came in from
the junior varsity to put up
four points in Forsyth
Central’s winning effort.
Four Bulldogs connected
for 3-pointers: Fulwood,
Gravitt, Jesse Martin, and Josh
Abbott, all with one each.
Another key for Central’s
win was free throws. The
Bulldogs went 15-for-18 from
the free-throw line.
“It was a total team effort,”
Koeplin said. “They shut
down Jason, and so the other
guys really stepped up.”
to make up its mind that that’s
going to happen,” he said.
“If we can play well up
front, then we’ve got a good
chance to win. But if we don’t
play well up front, it could be
a long afternoon.”
Even though he knows
LaGrange is considered the
favorite in this afternoon’s
contest, Miller said, the
Raiders are not about to back
down.
“We’ll line up and play
with them,” he said. “We’ve
met every challenge this year
so far, and we won’t back off
Earlier in the evening, the
Lady Bulldogs suffered a dis
appointing 50-47 loss to the
Pickens Lady Dragons.
Amy Mohr was the leading
scorer for Central (2-4, 0-3)
with 17 points. She was fol
lowed by Kasey McPherson
with nine points and Katie
Williams with eight.
It was a close game
throughout, with the Lady
Bulldogs trailing 12-9 at the
end of the first, but fighting
back for a 23-22 lead at the
half.
Pickens was able to edge
ahead 39-36 by the end of the
third, and held on to win by
three. With just 10 seconds to
go in the game, Central trailed
48-47 when a costly foul
sealed their fate. The Lady
Dragon made both free throws
to make the final 50-47.
“It was a game I felt we
should have won, but we’re
getting closer,” said Chris
Leak, head coach of the Lady
Bulldogs.
“I think if we would have
played a little better defense,
we might have had a better
chance. But they gave their
heart.”

now.”
In last week’s 17-14 win
over Washington County,
Miller said North Forsyth
missed a lot of minor assign
ments on offense little
things that they know better
and hopefully won’t do again.
For North Forsyth, the key
to beating LaGrange is being
able to slow them down, mov
ing the football and being
patient.
The Raiders will have to
