RACE from IB
While Mclntyre has com
peted in the race with her
team, “The Tortoise and the
Hare,” for the past three years,
this was her first time going
solo.
So, did she take a “slow
and steady” approach to this
year’s race?
Hardly.
“I’m more of the speedy
RIGG from IB
Kim worked as hard as any
player on the court, playing a
relentless schedule that includ
ed AAU tournaments as far
away as Las Vegas.
“From October to July she
had no other life than basket
ball,” said her mother. “But
she’s really enjoyed it, and
she’s taken this goal and made
it totally her own. [My hus
band and I] helped her, but it
was her dream.”
Kim also worked hard in
the classroom, maintaining a
4.10 grade point average while
taking advanced college place
ment classes.
At Southern Mississippi,
Rigg hopes to major in sports
medicine on her way to a
career in physical therapy.
After signing her letter of
intent on Wednesday night,
Rigg credited South Forsyth
head girls basketball coach
Debbie Blake and assistant
coach Keith Gravitt with con
stantly pushing her to do her
best.
“Coach Blake and Coach
Gravitt have been excellent
role models,” she said. “They

When the “24 Hours of
Adrenaline” race started in
1999, around 200 people
turned out. But over the years,
participation has continued to

year to 400 to 800 this year.
“It has just escalated,”
Mclntyre said. “It’s unreal

are supportive every step of
the way.”
Blake lauded Rigg for her
dedication to the sport and
noted her innate knowledge of
the game of basketball.
“She’s extremely smart,”
said Blake of Rigg, who’s
started for Blake since she was
a freshman. “She knows the
game real well and she’s she’s
also developed a lot in the
weight room. She’s got a pres
ence on the floor.”
South will need that pres
ence this season, as Rigg
becomes the focal point of the
Lady Eagle offense. After
averaging 10 points and 9
rebounds last season, Blake
expects other teams to focus
on Rigg as well.
“She didn’t get into any
foul problems last year,” said
Blake, “so we think it should
n’t be a problem playing her a
lot. She’ll get a little rest here
and there.”
That should be good news
for South, because if there’s
one thing Rigg has shown, it’s
that she doesn’t mind a little
extra work.

Dawgs have a lot riding on Auburn game
Two decades of near misses
and a slew of devastating loss
es to Auburn the two of
which have often coincided
leave Georgia with some seri
ous poltergeists to be exor
cised in the loveliest village on
the plains Saturday.
How big is this game for
the Bulldogs? A win would
give Georgia the opportunity
to play for its first
Southeastern Conference
championship in 20 years and
continue the greatest swell of
giddiness the Bulldog Nation
has been encompassed by
since the early ’Bos. A loss
would simply be a sharp pin in
the Georgia balloon, with faces
in hands after another bitter
ending against Auburn adds
2002 to the long list of
Bulldog post-Herschel
almosts.
It’s not just this season rid
ing on Saturday’s game, it’s 20
years of close calls that have
come up short and kept that
comma following 1982 in
Georgia’s list of Southeastern
Conference championships
excruciatingly perpetual. Go
back through the years. Had
Georgia won the SEC one, two
or three of the times it was so
close say in 1983, 87, 88,
92, 97 or 2000 then the
thought of a loss would not
have quite the horrific over
tones. Add to process the fact
that Georgia would have
clinched the East title and a
berth in the championship
game with a win over Florida.
But missed opportunities cost
the Dogs the game and a per
fect season, while leaving the
door open for the Gators.
A Florida win in ,
Gainesville over South
Carolina and an Auburn victo
ry would put the Gators back
in the SEC championship
game. It would also give the
Tigers a great chance to get to
Atlanta. Auburn sits at 4-2 in
the SEC West, a game behind
LSU, which lost on the plains
and faces mighty probation
ridden Alabama Saturday. Sans
Kentucky, nobody was as dis
appointed at what transpired

on the Bluegrass last weekend
as Auburn. The Tigers from
the plains would have squarely
been in the West driver’s seat
had it not been for the most
improbable last-second play
I’ve ever seen.
LSU’s miracle victory
trumps them all. Think about
it, a throw from the 20 to the
other 25, three tips, a running
catch and missed tackle all the
way to the end zone while the
home fans had stormed the
field and mounted the goal
posts after the coach had been
doused with the water bucket.
Doug Flutie and Kordell
Stewart launched last play
game-winners, but their passes
landed in the end zone. Cal-
Stanford ’B2 could get an argu
ment, but there’s no set pattern
to defend a play so crazy as six
laterals. LSU-Kentucky tops
my list.
For Georgia to win on
Saturday and head into the
showdown with dangerous
Georgia Tech at 10-1, the
Bulldogs must run the ball
successfully. The passing
attack figures not to be of the
normal high octane. With both
Terrence Edwards and Damien
Gary sidelined, the Dogs have
just Fred Gibson (with small
cast and all) from their terrific
trio of wide receivers. Looking
to the Florida game when only
Edwards was healthy sand
wiched between big wins over
Kentucky and Ole Miss when
two of the three played, it is
clear that Georgia’s offense
loses much with a pair on the
sidelines. This does serve as an
opportunity for Michael
Johnson, Reggie Brown, Ben
Watson, Bryan McClendon or
Mario Raley to step the fore
front. Nobody was able to do
that in a supporting role versus
Florida.

Dawgs’ QB David Greene, seen in Saturday’s win over
Ole Miss, prepares to hand off to tailback Tony Milton.
Auburn tailback Ronnie
Brown will be the key for
Georgia’s defense, if not for
the whole team. If he gets
rolling, the Dogs are in trou
ble. Though he does not pos
sess the wiggle and shiftiness
of fallen teammate “Cadillac”
Williams, Brown is big,
strong, fast and he runs hard.
He is a sure-fire first team All-
SEC performer. That also sets
up play-action for the fleet
Jason Campbell to bootleg or
throw to their outstanding col
lection of tight ends. I’ve
never claimed to be a genius,
but if I’m Tommy Tuberville,
my first item of the spring
practice agenda is to find a
way to get Williams and
Brown on the field together as
much as possible.
In the kicking game,
Jonathan Kilgo and Billy
Bennett must shine, while the
Dogs minus their top two
punt returners in Gary and
Edwards cannot afford a
gaffe in this phase of the game.
Auburn will try and wake
up the echoes.
In 1942, undefeated, top
ranked Georgia, coming off a
75-0 win over a Florida team
that had beaten Auburn, fell to
the Tigers. The Dogs wound
up 11-1 and consensus nation
al champions’with the top
ranking in six polls, but they
were not the AP national
champs because of Auburn.
In 1971, both the Dogs and
Tigers were undefeated. Pat

Athens and cost 11-1 Georgia
the SEC title.
From 1978-88, the Dogs
were 4-6-1 versus Auburn. A
tie in ’7B, and losses in ’79,
’B3, ’B7, and ’BB denied the
Bulldogs five more SEC
crowns.
In 1997, Georgia was fresh
off a win over Florida, but fell
to the Tigers. The Bulldogs
finished 10-2, but Auburn cost
the Dogs a shot at the SEC
title game and a Bowl
Coalition bid.
Auburn has now won three
straight over Georgia, with the
last two literally coming down
to the last play. Georgia is 2-10
in its last 12 games with the
Tigers in Sanford Stadium,
clearly one of the most embar
rassing statistics in the history
of Bulldog football.
Traditionally, Georgia has had
success on the plains, but
under Tommy Tuberville,
Auburn has vigorously defend
ed its home turf.
So much on the line for the
beat up and bruised Bulldogs,
and all that history on
Auburn’s side. But this
Georgia team has something,
including a coach that has the
look and make of someone
who will bring the Bulldog
Nation years of smiles. Twenty
years of “what-ifs?” are riding
on Saturday. This is the game
that charmed teams find away
to win.
Jeff Dantzler is a broad
caster with the Georgia
Bulldogs Radio Network.
