Bulldogs win
inspires a poem
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league the dream.
Into Auburn’s death valley
Rode the Bulldog team.
“Forward the Dog Brigade!
Charge for the goal!” Richt
said:
Into Auburn’s death valley
Rode the Bulldog team.
“Forward the Dog Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not tho’ the players knew
Had someone a scheme?
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do or die:
Into Auburn’s death valley
Rode the Bulldog team.
Tigers to the right of them.
Tigers to the left of them,
Tigers in front of them
Quite mean, they did seem.
Blitzing as each Dog fell,
Boldly they ran, and well.
Into the jaws of death
Awaiting the last bell
Rode the Bulldog team.
Now the Dog’s cupboard bare,
Injured folks everywhere.
No way to move by air;
A ground game with no flair;
Auburn on the beam.
Before the half was through
‘Twas Auburn’s game, you
knew;
The Tigers on a roll
But didn’t know the soul
Os this Georgia team.
After the halftime rest
The Dogs a team possessed.
As they drove down the field
Auburn’s defense would yield:
Touchdown, Georgia team!
But then, a short, bad kick;
Auburn begins to click.
Scoring without a strain,
Great glee over the Plain
Ending Georgia's dream.
But these Dogs weren’t done
yet;
Another challenge met.
From their two, the Dogs set;
When Musa found his jet.
Dog fans loose a scream.
Then the drive kept alive:
Wow! Number twenty-five!
Loose ball in the end zone;
Stinchcomb on it alone!
Scored one for his team.
FUTURE from IB
than just happy players to
win especially when play
ing in one of the toughest
regions in the state.
And with two Region 6-
AAAA opponents (Marist
and St. Pius) ranked in the
preseason top 10, the Lady
Raiders face a much tougher
schedule than in seasons
past.
“Any time you move up
from AAA to AAAA it’s a
big jump,” said Gliotta.
“Going from AA to AAA is
nothing compared to this.
We’re also playing in a very
tough region and we’re a
very young team.”
With that in mind, Gliotta
says that North’s coaching
staff won’t focus entirely on
the final score in ’O2-03.
“Winning [this season] is
going to be like the extra
spice your grandmother used
to put in her apple pie,” said
Gliotta.
“It will make it that much
sweeter when we do win, but
it’s not the main thing we’re
looking for.”
But don’t expect the Lady
Raiders to play entirely for
the love of the game
they’ll still be gunning for
every opponent and may
even have an advantage.
“We’ve got nothing to
lose, so we’re going to go
out and give it everything
we’ve got, every night,” said
Gliotta.
If the Lady Raiders are to
■ find success this season, they
must play disciplined, con
trolled basketball against
some very quick opponents.
“We’ve got to be smarter
than the other team,” said
Gliotta. “We’re not going to
be flashy, and most teams in
this region will be faster than
us. We’ve been teaching our
kids a lot, but it’s going to

Dog defense does the rest
Passing every late test.
Coach Tuberville must frown:
They can’t make a first down!
Against this Georgia team.
The offense, one last chance
To do a title dance.
Sixty yards from the goal:
Could they get on a roll
And secure the dream?
Fred Gibson, a catch deep!
Dog destiny to keep?
Now fourteen yards away
Plenty of time to play:
Come on, Georgia team!
Two passes, incomplete;
Another incomplete;
Can this really be?
Will Auburn wriggle free
Os this Georgia team?
Fourth down, the final play:
Could Georgia find away?
Or, like a year ago
When Jasper couldn’t go
Through a tiny seam?
Greene’s pass now in the air;
Michael Johnson right there!
Hopes, dreams of twenty years
Drowned now in raucous
cheers
For this Bulldog team.
Tigers to the right of them,
Tigers to the left of them,
Tigers in front of them
Quite mean, they did seem.
But these Dogs never quit.
Never spit out the bit.
Came through the jaws of
death
Answered the final bell.
The proud Bulldog team.
Let not their glory fade;
O! The comeback they made!
A twenty year dream!
Honor the game they played;
Honor the Dog Brigade
Georgia’s title team!

take a while to instill every
thing.”
Adding to a smoother
transition are three seniors
guards Kate Hobgood and
Abbey Nix along with post
player Morgan Bosch who
have also helped to unify a
team looking for a fresh start.
“Our biggest strength
right now is team unity,” said
Gliotta.
“We’ve got three seniors
and three juniors, and the rest
are [underclassmen]. It’s a
good group and they’re real
ly working hard.
If the Lady Raiders con
tinue to work hard and learn,
then as Gliotta has seen
before the ’O2-’O3 season
may be the start of something
special at North.
You can’t predict the
future, but you can
plan for it now.

think the rest of the team will also,”
Blake said.
While Rigg who recently signed
scholarship papers with University of
Southern Mississippi has played in
three state tournaments, the fourth is
hardly guaranteed.
“It’s not going to just take Kim
it’s going to take everybody," Blake
said. “It takes all, right now, 11 varsity
players.”
As for Mulryan, Blake is looking to
get her more minutes on the floor while
keeping her out of foul trouble.
With only two seniors, the team’s
success will come largely from how the
squad’s five juniors, three sophomores
and one freshman are able to perform.
“We’re a young club, no doubt about
it,” Blake said.
Junior post player Ashley Bostic has
been sick over the past couple of weeks
and is almost back to full speed
something the Lady Eagles greatly antic
ipate.
Junior guard Cassie Walters spent her
summer “vacation” working out in
weight room and making hundreds of
shots each day in preparation of a gruel-
CENTRAL from IB
tive. We need to take that next
step and go from being com
petitive to being in the hunt
for the championship.”
And, while Leak makes
no claims about where the
team will finish, the goal is
nothing short of the region
championship something
that will not come easy in a
new region with mostly new
opponents.
“We could do very well
[or] we could do very poor
I just don’t know. I’m
pleased so far with what I’ve
seen. We’ve got some good,
young players,” Leak said.
The Lady Dawgs have
only two returning seniors in
post Katie Williams and Jessi
Ingram.
“But I look for both of
them to contribute,” Leak
said.
Along with its seniors,
Central’s offense will also be
sparked by junior Amy
Mohr, who averaged 19
points per game as a sopho
more, along with about five
assists, four rebounds and
four steals per game.
“She’s a preseason All-1
Region selection in our new
region,” Leak said. “So,
already, the other coaches

ing season in Region 6-AAAA.
“She has stepped up her game this
summer. It’s a totally different young
lady on the floor,” Blake said.
“I’m looking forward to her having a
good season. She deserves it.”
As the team’s lone freshman, Kelly
Klein, Blake said, already has the expe
rience and talent to become a “super
star,” much like her sister, Laura, who
graduated last year.
“I look forward to working with her
for the next four years,” Blake said.
“She’s a gem.”
The biggest strength of the 2002-03
edition of the Lady Eagles is that they
return three post players in Rigg,
Mulryan and Bostic.
“That’s where we need to focus a lot
of the game,” Blake said. “We’re in a
new region and it’s going to be a totally
different kind of ball.”
Indeed, South Forsyth’s competition
is nothing to underestimate. Even with
the good outside shooting of junior
Alicia Rogers and the speed of sopho
more guard Kim Jordan, every night
could be a battle.
“We have our hands full,” Blake said.
about her.”
Backing up Mohr will be
guards Kristy Gayton and
Jennifer Korb, two of three
sophomores on the roster.
Sophomore Brittany
Romig joins the varsity after
playing JV last season.
“She’s got some good
size,” Leak said. “She
reminds me of Jessi Ingram,
my senior. And she continues
to improve.”
Also look for contribu
tions from hard-working,
skilled freshman Karla
Vickery, the only ninth grad
er on the roster.
“She has looked real good
and has really done a good
job adjusting and fitting into
the program,” Leak said.
“She played with us this
summer and was already

Leak is looking for per

“She was a transfer from
North [Forsyth], so she wasn’t
allowed to play varsity last

“I’m looking at Tucker being real strong
[and] I’m looking at Forsyth Central to
be a strong team. Those four [including
No. 5 St. Pius X and No. 10 Marist]
probably have me more worried than
anybody.
“Can we compete with the speed of
Tucker and some of these other teams?
It’s going to be a lot of strategy, also ...
As soon as we scout, we know what
everybody does. But it’s not what you
run, it’s how you run it and counteract it.
It’s a chess game out there.”
The Lady Eagles opened their season
Tuesday evening against Centennial
High School as part of the South Forsyth
Tip-Off Classic. Results were not avail
able at deadline.
Blake’s goal for her young team is
for the girls to continue improving and
keep their confidence up. While the lack
of experience in the backcourt is a weak
ness, the coach knows early season tour
nament games will provide playing time
that will pay off when South’s region
schedule opens Dec. 3 at Tucker.
Then they’ll have plenty of experi
ence and [inexperience] won’t be an

all of them ... I feel pretty
confident that, whoever I put
in there, I’m not really going
to lose a whole lot.”
This season, Leak is
joined by assistant coaches
Jessica Crawford and Tracy
Cann.
Crawford returns for her
second season with the Lady
Dawgs and will also lead the
junior varsity team.
Cann joins the Lady
Dawg staff after coaching in
Union County, and playing
on Kennesaw State’s national
championship softball team.
“Both have a really good
knowledge of the game,”
Leak said.
“Behind every coach,
you’ve got to have a good
support staff. They do a real
good job.”
