“We need more help for
the distribution date on the
23rd,” Rosewall said.
Volunteers should be able
bodied and prepared to carry
boxes to the 400 or so families
who will be picking up the
food between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Sponsors and volunteers
also are needed for Christmas
assistance.
Hands Across Forsyth last
year served more than 1,000
children, Rosewall said.
“We expect even more this
year,” she said, opening a
drawer filled with applica
tions that have no sponsor.
“They will get a wish list of
the child and fill it as best they
can to try and make these chil
dren’s wishes come true.”
“There is a lot of affluence
in this county,” Rosewall said.;

Forsyth tutors volunteer
with the learner in mind
The volunteer tutors of
Literacy Volunteers of Forsyth
County work with both
English speaking and non-
English speaking learners.
One of the main reasons that
learners are so successful with
LVA tutoring is that the tutor
collaborates with the learner to
plan the goals the LEARNER
wishes to attain. This goal
may be to go on to the Adult
Education Center to attain a
GED, however the learner may
set a goal of reading better to
attain a better position where
they are employed.
About 2 years ago, Herbert
saw our ad on Prestige Cable
Channel 4 and called our
office and asked for tutoring
so he could keep up and help
his 6-year old son with reading
lessons. Herbert could speak
some English but could not
read or write well in English,
though he was educated in his
native Spanish and was very
motivated to work hard and
learn. “I want to know more
than I know now. I can read a
little, but I can’t write or spell.
I can get a better job if I can
read and write.”
Herbert and his tutor
worked on Basic English, sur
vival skills (reading labels,
directions, signs, and forms)
and during this time he was
able to get off public assis
tance. His new goal was to get
his CDL license; however, his
employer had set up a require
ment that Herbert get a waste
water license. So, working
with his tutor (and her hus
band who knew the subject)
Herbert took a college class
for waste management and
passed the class. However,
when the time came for
Herbert to take the test for his
license, he was not allowed to
take the test, as he did not
have a GED or high school
diploma.
So Herbert went back to

work on getting and passing
his CDL license. He is work
ing for another company now
and hopes to work on his GED
in the future.
Is this a success store?
Very much so ... It takes
determination and a real deal
of time and effort for adult
learners to advance and while
the determination is always
present, finding the time
between job and family obli
gations is very hard. Our
tutors meet with learners after
working hours and on
Saturday. Though most of our
tutors use the Literacy Center
in the Cumming Library,
Herbert and his tutor met at a
location (mutually agreed
upon) nearer his employment.
They worked out a schedule
that was convenient to them
and if one or the other was
unable to make ihe session
they notified the other and
they would meet the following
week. They worked for 2
years and if Herbert wants to
work further with a tutor he
knows he can call LVA and we
will help. We provide a learn
er oriented team effort with
the goal as the focus, not
attaining the goal in a certain
time frame as the focus.
