Meanwhile, Central (2-5,
1-4) despite a 23-point
performance from star point
guard Amy Mohr and forcing
21 South Forsyth turnovers
will now look to bounce
back after dropping four of
five region contests.
“We’re not getting the job
done,” said Central head
coach Chris Leak.
“We go on spurts where
we play really well, but then
we have periods of mental
and physical let-downs. But
there’s only one way to go
and that’s up.”
South grabbed the game’s
early momentum, building
what Gravitt noted was a
crucial 10-4 lead, as Alicia
Rogers nailed two 3-point
ers.
“It was important when
we got up early,” said
Gravitt. “It really helped us
with our confidence.”
The Lady Dawgs
answered the early South
push with a 15-2 run, capped
by Mohr’s 3-pointer, to give
Central a 19-12 lead midway
through the second quarter.
But even with Central
establishing its offense,
South began to find its own
rhythm late in the period and
used two straight baskets
from Kristi Sanders and
Kelly Klein to pull within
22-19 at the half.
The game continued to
stay tight in the third, with
each team going on short
runs. Central took a 31-27
lead with just 1:22 left in the

quarter but couldn’t pull
away as South evened the
score at 31-31 entering the
final quarter.
The Lady Eagles contin
ued their push into the
fourth, capping a 9-0 run
with Rogers’ fourth 3-pointer
of the night to give South a
36-31 advantage.
Needing an answer, the
Lady Dawgs turned to Mohr,
who responded with eight
straight points to give
Central a 39-36 lead with
4:53 remaining.
From there, the scoring
slowed down, as both teams
went cold from the field,
South just managing to even
the score at 40-40 with 1:43
remaining.
Both teams had chances
to take control as the clock
ticked down, but neither
could convert until Reitz
finally popped up, wide open
underneath the basket. And,
although the freshman
missed the shot, the foul on
the play sent her to the line
where she sunk the winning
shot.
“That was a big, big free
throw,” said Gravitt. “The
girls are really excited. We
want to enjoy this, but we
also want to stay focused.
Kids sometimes get wrapped
up in county rivalries.”
Rogers finished as
South’s leading scorer with
12 points, while Klein added
seven.
Meanwhile, for Leak and
the Lady Dawgs, the time to
rebound is now.
