and doing what they needed to
do.”
Aided by five different
scorers, the Bulldogs (6-12, 5-
7) jumped out to a 13-7 advan
tage after one quarter of play.
But South Forsyth battled
back, sparked to life by five
War Eagle 3-pointers —two
from Jake Baldwin (game-high
18 points) to outscore
Central 19-12 for a narrow
lead at the half. Bulldog junior
forward Kyle Peacock nailed a
trey at the buzzer, pulling the
Dawgs within a point, 26-25,
at intermission.
Before the game, Barnes
was concerned about his team
playing with togetherness and
intensity. Afterwards, those
worries had been alleviated.
“You answered that ques
tion,” the coach told his Dawgs
following the game. “You
spilled your guts for me, and
I'm proud of you for that.”
The Bulldogs clamped
down defensively in the third
quarter, holding South to just
eight points while scoring 12
closing out the period with
six unanswered points for a
37-34 advantage entering the
fourth.
Trailing by three points, the
War Eagles called upon an
unlikely hero in Derek
Johnson.
Johnson did not disappoint
chipping in.eight of his 13
points, including a 4-for-5
fourth-quarter free-throw per
formance, to lead South to a
19-8 quarter and the 53-45 vic
tory.
“I’ve been here two years,
and that’s the best I’ve seen
him play,” Sokol said. “Not
just offensively, but you could
see the effort and desire in the
way he played. It was great to
see.
"It was just good to finish
the game the way we did. We
had some guys hit some free
throws [and we] really execut
ed down the stretch and got
some key rebounds...
They played a good defen
sive game. Very physical. I
think we responded well in the
second half and were fortunate
to come out on top.”
Other top scorers for the
night included Central’s Judd
Gravitt (13 points) and Phil
Paulk (10 points), as well as
South’s Chris Turley (nine
points) and Bulldog Jonathan
Wojociechowski (eight points).
Offensively, Central execut
ed better than they had in the
past couple of games some
thing Barnes finds very
encouraging.
“I told them that if we can
continue to have that kind of
effort and that togetherness
and intensity then we’re
going to win some games,” he
said.
"Defensively, we’ve come
light years. Coach Andy
Martin has really taken that
defense and put some passion
in it. The guys have really
responded well to him in prac
tice.”
While South faces the
Dunwoody Friday (7 p.m.),
Central takes on Tucker at 6
p.m., before hosting River
wood on Saturday with a 4
p.m. first tip.

PUSH from IB
“I’ve got one senior, and
she wasn’t here,” said Central
head coach Chris Leak.
“So it was the ’O4-05 team
a year early. The kids had to
work, in one night, through
the transition of new roles
and that’s hard to do. It took
them a quarter to do it... but
from there on, we beat them.
You take that one poor quar
ter out, and we played fairly
well.”
Aside from the scoring
drought in the first quarter.
Leak was pleased with the
remainder of the contest,
focusing on his Lady Dawgs’
30 points scored in the final
three quarters, versus south’s
27.
The third quarter opened
with the same streaky play
shown in the first half, with
South scoring the first seven
points of the period, followed
by eight from Central for a
28-21 Lady Eagle (7-12, 6-6)
advantage entering the fourth.
South turned up the heat
in the final stanza, however,
outscoring the Lady Dawgs
17-9 as they pulled away for
the 45-30 victory.
“Kelley Klein played a

Johnson doesn’t talk much
on the court (or anywhere,
according to coaches). He
leaves that to point guard
Travis Patterson, but it was
Johnson’s play that did all the
talking Tuesday.

val, as North (11-6 overall, 7-4
in Region 6-AAAA) outscored
Riverwood 26-4 in the third
quarter to put the game away.
“We played an excellent
second half,” said Osborne. “In
the first half, we were getting
shots, but nothing would go in.
But in the third quarter we
came out like gang-busters.”
Every shot seemed to fall
during the decisive third. Nine
different players scored during
the period, including seven
from Elizabeth Benedict (sec
ond on the team with nine
points). Mallory Holtzclaw
finished the game with seven
points and three other players
added six.
The Lady Raiders cruised
through the fourth and now
prepare for a tough weekend
against St. Pius X and
Chamblee both of whom
defeated North earlier this sea

“We’ve improved a lot,”
said Osborne. “But Friday and
Saturday will be very telling
for us.”

Forsyth Central, mean

games to find improvement,
the Lady Dawgs coach said,
with the goal of peaking in

tournament at Marist.
“It picked up in the sec

half.” Leak said. “I felt like
we built some good charac

and played good ball.
“We’re disappointed with
[the loss], but we didn’t play
bad. And I keep saying,
we’re going to be ready
come Feb. 10 and we’re
going to be a hard team to
beat.”

Raiders overtaken in fourth
The North Forsyth Raiders
started strong but couldn’t find
a big shot late as the fell to

night on the road.
The Raiders (11-6, 5-6)
exploded for 19 points in the
first quarter but then went cold
from the floor, shooting just 5-
of-24 in the second half as
Riverwood came from behind
to win.
North had several chances
to win or tie during the game’s
waning moments but couldn’t
sink the crucial shot.
“We had about five good
looks and just couldn’t put it
down,” said North coach Phil
Moore.
“The last few minutes cost

then we just went cold.”
Zak Moore led the Raiders
early charge, nailing three 3-
pointers in the first quarter.
Moore added another trey in
the third, finishing with a
team-high 16 points.
North center Matt Womack
also enjoyed another strong
performance, scoring 12 points
and ripping down 13 rebounds.
But Womack’s four fourth
quarter points weren’t enough
as Riverwood outscored the
Raiders 12-8 in the final frame.
“We’ve got to shake this
off and be ready to go,” said
Moore. “We’ve got eight more
games left, and every game is
a battle.”
North will look to rebound
this weekend against region
cellar-dwellers St. Pius X and
Chamblee. But Moore warned
that any team in 6-AAAA is
dangerous.
“From [third place to 10th
place], it’s very close in the
region,” said Moore.
Friday’s scheduled tip off
in Coal Mountain is at 7 p.m.
Justin Boling qualified with a
score of 299.9 in just his sec
ond meet of the year.
Competing in 11 dives at
the UGA Invitational, Boling
beat the state mark by almost
30 points.
“I’m really pleased with
that,” said South head coach
Kris Hunt.
Forsyth swimmers and
divers will continue to stay
busy, with North Forsyth and
South Forsyth again heading
to Brenau for competition
tonight, while Central will
swim at Brenau next weekend.
