Into the wild
Fourth-graders at Cumming Elementary recently applied their scientific knowledge
on a field trip to Elachee Nature Center in Gainesville. They learned about animal
and plant adaptations through a guided trail hike and participated in cooperative
activities with the classroom guide.

Tops in geography bee
Fifth-grader Jackson Depping, left, won the Cumming Elementary Geography Bee on
Jan. 12. Fourth-grader Josh Schuyler, right, was first runner-up. The other eight final
ists were Chap Lindstrom, Drew Kane, Nathan Noriega, Jose Gonzalez, Keaton
Chilian, Jordan Melliadis and Brooke Stinehart. The National Geographic Bee is a
nationwide contest open to fourth- through eighth-grade students under age 15.

Thomas Machek
...of Cumming, has been
accepted to attend the
University of Northwestern
Ohio in Lima, Ohio. He will
begin classes in August and
major in the university's High
Performance program.
Machek currently attends
South Forsyth High School.
Gail Richardson
...a ninth grade English
teacher at North Forsyth high
School, has been selected by
the Teacher Leaders Network
as a Washington Mutual
Leadership Fellow for the
2003-2004 school year.
Richardson is one of 12 teach
ers chosen from among the
organization's 200 person
membership across the south
eastern U.S.
As a TLN WaMu Fellow,
Richardson will help create a
leadership training program
for network members and
develop policy papers that
bring the perspectives of suc
cessful classroom teachers to
critical education issues.
Richard is a 19-year teach
ing veteran and a National
Board Certified Teacher.

Scholarship applications

two SI,OOO scholarships to
award in May - up to $7 mil
lion worth. New this year,
there will be state and national
winners with an opportunity
for a total scholarship award

Scholarships will be
awarded based on academic
record, ACT/SAT test scores,
community and extracurricular
involvement, work experience
and financial need.
The scholarships are fund
