Dixie Speedway prepares for season
From staff reports
Dixie Speedway will
present the Spring Short
Track Championships on
Saturday night, March 13,
highlighted by a 50-lap
$3,000-to-win special event
for the Super Late Models.
The Dixie Speedway
Limited Late Models,
Sportsmen, Super Bombers,
Econo Bombers and Cruisers
will also be in action on the
3/8-mile clay oval.
“We usually begin our
season in April at Dixie
Speedway, but there was a
strong demand from both
fans and competitors to have
a special event in March,”
FADE from 1B
about finishing strong. The
next step in their progression,
he added, is being able to fin
ish strong.
“This little ol’ crew has
come a long way,” Barnes
said. “We’re giving ourselves
a chance to win. It’s the fin
ish, now.”
Central (7-14 overall, 6-9
in Region 6-AAAA) held
their own in an extremely
slow-paced first half, entering
the second period tied 7-7.
Trailing 17-15 with time run
ning out in the second period.
Bulldog junior Robert
Pendino set up for a 3-pointer,
only to have the ball knocked
out of bounds by Marist’s
Kevin Moore (team-high 14
points) with :04.4 until half
time.
Moore got his hands on
the in-bound pass, but
Bulldog senior Ryan Fulwood
(game-high 19 points, five 3-
pointers) stepped up with a
steal and nailed a trey for an
18-17 Forsyth Central advan
tage at intermission.
Marist (18-1, 12-1)
RALLY from IB
caught and passed the Raiders
with a 10-2 run.
North scrambled for an
answer but couldn't find a
shot, attempting just three
during the final eight minutes.
Tyler Smith extended a Raider
lifeline with :12 remaining,
nailing a leaning 3-pointer to
pull North within 41-39. But
the Raiders couldn't get
another shot off before time
expired.
Jacob Patterson finished as
South’s second-leading scorer
with nine points, while Brett
Smith added seven. North was
led by Christopher Light’s
seven, while Jennings,
Helland, Womack and Zak

really well.”
Only the top four teams
advance to the state champi
onship next weekend in
Columbus.
It’s not unreasonable to
think that all three Forsyth
squads could make that
upcoming trip.
“I have no doubt that
we’ll be in the top three as
long as they just continue
doing what they’ve been
doing,” said Jennifer Kinsey,
cheerleading coach at North
said Mike Swimms, general
manager of Dixie Speedway.
“Our competitors wanted
an opportunity to try out
their new race cars, and our
Sportsman Division wanted
a chance to work with the
new GM Crate Engine.”
Swims also said the
March 13 date will give out
of town fans attending the
NASCAR races at Atlanta
Motor Speedway an opportu
nity to see some dirt track
racing during their visit to
the area.
The pit gate will open at
2 p.m. on March 13, and the
grandstand gate will open at
4 p.m. Hot laps for the
outscored the Dawgs 14-12 in
the third quarter. Fulwood hit
another 3-pointer at :36.5 in
the third, pulling Central to
within 31-30 entering the
fourth.
But Marist turned up the
heat in the fourth, outscoring
the Bulldogs 12-4 in the final
stanza for the 43-34 win.
“I’m so proud of them,
the way they fought against,
I think, a great club. We
played them tough,” Barnes
said.
“Now, we’re being able to
play with anybody we get on
the court with, and that’s
coming a long way in a short
amount of time ... We're
doing things the right way,
and if we can continue doing
that, and we play like this and
give ourselves a chance
what more can you ask?”
Lady Dawgs fall in
waning minutes
Forsyth Central senior
guard Amy Mohr led all scor
ers with 30 points Tuesday
night, but it was not enough
Moore each scored six.
"Brett Smith shot well
down the stretch,” noted
Sokol, whose War Eagles face
Riverwood tonight at home.
"But we still need to do a bet
ter job of executing at the end
of the game.”
North, meanwhile, will
look to rebound tonight
against region foe North
Springs.
“We’ve got to concentrate
and not make turnovers,” said
Moore.
"Every game’s going to be
tight [in the region tourna
ment]... And if you execute,
you'll have a chance of win
ning.”
Forsyth.
With four competitions so
far, the girls from North have
one first-place finish (at
Dawson County), a third
(Gordon Central) and two
fourth-places (South Gwin
nett and Winder-Barrow.
“Our girls are awesome,”
Kinsey added. “The problem
is that with the season
coming to an end and we’ve
trained so hard all year long
the girls are starting to get

As a preview for the
Spring Short Track Champ-
to overcome Marist’s fourth
quarter assault as the visiting
Lady Eagles pulled away for
the 61-50 victory.
“It was just a great effort.
We just ran out of gas at the
end,” said Lady Dawgs head
coach Chris Leak. “We
played 28 really good min
utes, but that last four caught
up with us and we just could
n’t quite hold on.
Central (9-12 overall, 5-10
in Region 6-AAAA) led
Marist (12-7, 10-3) 13-9 after
the first quarter and took a 25-
23 into the locker room at
halftime.
The third quarter was a
dead-heat, 17-17, Central still
holding a 42-40 as the fourth
quarter began.
“Our focus is playing
good defense and we did
that for the most part
tonight... for about 28 min
utes,” Leak said. “We shut
down one of the best posts

in the region, but probably in
the state —for three quar

Mannino had just four
points through the first three
quarters, before exploding for
nine more in the fourth,
sparking Marist’s move past
Central.
Mohr’s 30 points were fol
lowed by Karla Vickery with
seven.
For Marist, a trio of scor
ers finished in double digits.
Tiffany Davis led the Lady
Eagles with 19, followed by
Christi Mannino and Kristine
Gleason (four 3’s) with 13
points apiece.
“They’ve got a lot of hors
es in that stable, and it’s hard
to compete against that. We
did a really good job tonight,
but we just didn’t quite get it
done,” Leak said.
“One of the things we’re
trying to work on is bringing
it up to that next level. We’re
working on it, and we’re get
ting there, but we didn’t quite
have it tonight.”

HOLD from IB
who scored 12 points all
from the free-throw line in
the quarter to hold on for the
win.
“Physically, our effort was
there tonight,” said Gravitt.
“But mentally, we [weren’t at
our best]. Against a team as
patient and deliberate as North,
you’ve got to be on top of your
game.”
South will look to break a
three-game losing streak
tonight against visiting
Riverwood, as Gravitt prepares
his charges for the looming
region tourney.
“You don’t want spirits to
get down because the [region]
tournament is what you play
all season for,” said Gravitt.
“We gotta stay focused.
There’s still work to be done.”
For North, one of the keys
for their postseason dreams
was made clear Tuesday:
“We’re going to have to
keep shooting well at the free
throw line,” stated Osborne.
North is also looking to
tidy up their game as they prep
for the season’s stretch run,
continuing with tonight’s con
test against visiting North
Springs.
“We’re trying to clean up,”
said Osborne. “We’re going to
focus on what we’ve been
doing and try to get better in
other areas.”
