reports on file with the Forsyth
County Sheriff’s Office.
Counterfeiting: A school
bookkeeper on Wednesday
discovered a counterfeit S2O

The bookkeeper used a
special marker to test the bill
and the test indicated the bill
was counterfeit.
Shooting: Deputies and
detectives were called to
Northside Hospital Forsyth
Saturday night after a man
who had been shot was
brought to the emergency

The victim, 21-year-old
Sebastian Jesus Valero of

Forsyth County, had been shot

He would only say that the
shooting took place some
where on Canton Highway.
A man in the hospital wait
ing room came forward to say
he saw Valero get dropped off
on Canton Highway by a
black Honda Accord that had
three other people inside.
The Honda left after Valero
got out.
Burglary: On Sunday, a
58-year-old woman living in
the 8600 block of Nicholson
Road reported that her apart
ment had been burglarized
sometime between Dec. 15
and Jan. 5.
The victim, who said she
went on a trip for 21 days and
left her apartment door
unlocked, told deputies that
someone went into her filing
cabinet and took her retire
ment fund papers and possibly
some bank account stubs.
Theft: A tiller was stolen

In addition, Drug Court
participants come before
Bagley every Tuesday after
noon. As time goes by, the
judge said, defendants can
come less often but in the
beginning, he wants to see
them each week and monitor
their progress.
He will also receive reports
on the participants from the
substance abuse treatment
providers, from prosecutors
and from Johnston.
If participants lapse in their
recovery, Bagley may threaten
to remove them the Drug
Court program and refer their
case back to criminal court for
sentencing on the original
charges. That could mean time
the 3500 block of Chickory
Creek Road sometime on
Sunday morning between 4:30
a.m. and 10:22 a.m.
Burglary: Two horse sad
dles, a 10-ton chain hoist, an
antique iron lantern, sheets
and towels worth $3,500
in total were stolen from a
vacant home in the 6900 block
of Wallace Tatum Road some
time overnight on Jan. 22 or
Jan. 23.
The burglars apparently
gained entry to the residence
by kicking in the rear door.
Stolen car recovered: A
1988 Pontiac Fiero with a
replica Lamborghini Diablo
body had been sitting in the
parking lot at Habersham
Marina for four days when
deputies were called to inves
tigate on Friday.
When the law enforcement
officers checked the VIN num
ber through a statewide crime
database, they learned that the
car had been reported stolen
from Alpharetta.
behind bars.
Despite Forsyth County's
first lapse, studies indicate that
drug courts have a significant
impact on defendant recidi
vism.
According to a report enti
tled “Estimate of Drug Court
Recidivism Rates,” research
ers who followed 2,000 gradu
ates from 100 drug courts
across the country found a
recidivism rate of 16.4 percent
after one year and 27.5 per
cent after two years.
In contrast, those defen
dants who went to prison on
drug charges, instead of enter
ing a drug court, reported
recidivism rates of 43.5 per
cent after one year and 58.6
percent after two.
Mary Alice Park passes available"
By Nicole Green
Staff Writer
In the wake of the first
winter ice storm, the city of
Cumming begins preparation
for spring recreation on Lake
Lanier.
Annual passes to Mary
Alice Park are available for
S2O at the Cumming
Fairgrounds, said fairgrounds
events coordinator Tracy
Helms.
The fairgrounds will sell
annual passes until the park
opens April 2. After the park
opens, $3 daily car passes and
annual passes will be sold at
the gate house.
“Most people who use the
park on a regular basis had
rather have an annual pass
than pay $3 each time,” Helms
said.
Mary Alice is a daily use
park with boat ramps, picnic
tables, a pavilion and swim
ming area.
Overnight camping is not
permitted. The pavilion may
be rented for events.
The city of Cumming has
leased Mary Alice Park from
the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers for three years,
Helms said. The Mary Alice
Park pass is not for use at any
other Corps parks on Lake
