Take care of your diabetes
by remembering your ABCs
By Debbie Wilburn
For the Forsyth County News
Recently the National Diabetes Education
Program and the American Diabetes
Association have encouraged people with
diabetes to know the ABCs of diabetes.
These ABC’s aimed to reduce risk for heart
disease and stroke. Now the American
Diabetes Association has added D, E, F, G, H
and I to those ABCs to help people with dia
betes to keep themselves healthy.
“A” stands for the Ale test. This test
should be done at least twice a year. It meas
ures a person’s average blood glucose over
the past three months. Ideally the value
should be under 7 percent to reduce risk for
diabetic complications.
“A” also stands for albuminuria (al-bew
min-uria)and aspirin. People who have dia
betes are more likely to get kidney disease.
Albuminuria shows that protein is being
leaked by the damaged kidney into the urine.
A test that measures the ratio of albumin
to creatinine(cree-at-tin-een), another sub
stance in the urine, can detect early kidney
disease. If kidney disease is found soon
enough, it often can be stopped. This may
prevent the need for dialysis or a kidney
transplant. The ratio should be under 30 and
the test should be done yearly.
A low dose of aspirin taken daily can help
prevent heart attack and stroke. But aspirin is
not for everyone, only take it after checking
with a doctor.
“B” is for blood pressure. People with
diabetes are more likely to have high blood
pressure. It can damage the heart, blood ves
sels, kidneys and eyes. Ideally the blood
pressure for someone with diabetes should be
under 130/80. Have it checked at every doc
tor’s visit.
“C” is for cholesterol. The LDL choles
terol level has the greatest effect on risk for
heart attack and stroke. It should be under
100 for someone who has diabetes. Be sure it
is checked every year.
“D” is for diabetes education. There are
new diabetes treatments all the time. A per
son with diabetes needs to see a diabetes
nurse educator and a dietitian at least once a
year.
“E” is for eye exam. Yearly eye exams can
catch diabetic eye disease early. Early treat
ment can prevent loss of vision due to dia-

Frequent blood glucose

glucose values should be

betes.
“F” is for foot care. People with diabetes
need their feet checked daily. Look for red
spots, blisters, bruises, wounds any
changes that can spell trouble. Do not think
pain will show there is a foot problem. Nerve
damage may prevent a person from feeling
that something is wrong. Report problems to
the doctor. The doctor should also look at the
feet at every check-up and do a complete foot
exam at least once a year.
“G” is for glucose (sugar) monitoring.
Frequent blood glucose monitoring will
reveal high or low blood glucose values.
Then they can be treated quickly. Discuss
with the medical team how often to monitor
and what the range of blood glucose values
should be.
“H” is for healthy. Complications from flu
and pneumonia can kill or at least make a
person with diabetes very sick. A pneumonia
shot is needed at least once and a flu shot is
needed yearly.
“I” is for identifying special medical
needs. No one wants diabetic complications.
A person with diabetes needs to tell the med
ical team right away about any health con
cerns. A referral to a specialist may be need
ed to prevent the problem from getting
worse.
