Man leads deputy on chase around
kitchen before arrest on drug charge
By Steven H. Pollak
Staff Writer
A man who led deputies on
a brief chase around his
kitchen table and front yard
wound up behind bars after
taking off with his stash of
marijuana plants.
Deputies arrested Alan
Franklin Johnson, 25, of
Wallace Tatem Road in
Forsyth County, on one count
of manufacturing marijuana
and one count of obstruction
of a law enforcement officer.
A deputy looking to serve
a warrant on a woman arrived
at Johnson’s residence in the
7700 block of Wallace Tatem
Road shortly before midnight
on Wednesday night.
Johnson told the deputy
that the woman was not at the
home. The deputy asked to
look inside the house anyway.
The law enforcement offi
cer and Johnson walked
through the house together
but, at one point, Johnson
stood in front of a door near
the garage area and would not
let the deputy look inside.
The deputy said he needed
to see what was in the room
and Johnson opened the door.
Inside the room, the deputy
saw 10 marijuana plants.
Johnson became “real
nervous,” according to an
account of the incident report-

The victim told deputies

He tried to run for the door
but the deputy stood in his
way. Johnson told the deputy
he feared he would “lose his

getting more upset.”
With the kitchen table
between them, Johnson tried
to run one way and then the
other but the deputy kept cut
ting off his escape.
After several warnings, the
deputy decided to pepper
spray Johnson. Johnson then
charged the deputy and the
two briefly wrestled before the
suspect broke free.
The deputy chased Johnson
into the front yard and the two
ran around the house and yard
several times before the sus
pect went back inside the resi
dence.
As the deputy came into
the home, he heard Johnson
inside the room with the mari

door open and saw Johnson
had pulled all the marijuana
plants up.
Johnson “ran and tried to
jump through the window but
only bounced off it,” the sher
iff’s office report said.
Again, the two began to
tussle while standing but,
according to the report, the
deputy’s foot got caught in
something and both men fell
to the floor.
Johnson got up but the
deputy held onto the suspect’s
leg. The man was able to
break free of the deputy’s
grasp and run outside with the
marijuana plants in hand.
The deputy chased him
around the yard a few more
times before Johnson tried
going a few laps around his
truck.
The deputy finally caught
up to the suspect and put
Johnson over the hood of the
truck to place him in hand
cuffs.
By this time, several other
deputies arrived at the house.
With Johnson in the back
seat of a patrol car, four
deputies followed a trail of
marijuana leaves and broken
plants from the house, across
the yard and to the road. The
bits and pieces of the plants
were collected and placed into
evidence.
