History meets home renovation
on 'This Old House'
By Monique Skotnicki

If you have at least $l million
to spend on housing, prefer to pay
a hefty import tax instead of
income tax and have no problem
trading your second car for a
scooter, Bermuda is hard to beat.
Just ask residents Michael
Douglas and Catherine Zeta-
Jones.
And that’s not even taking into
consideration that the island,
which has a population of 62,000,
is the No. I wreck-diving destina
tion and boasts more golf courses
per its 21-square miles than any
where in the world. Add warm
weather, pink sand, turquoise
waters, rich cultural history and its
proximity to the United States
(650 miles east of Cape Hatteras,
N.C.), and it’s no wonder that mas
ter carpenter Norm Abram, host
Kevin O’Connor and the rest of
the crew of “This Old House” are
delighted the subject of the show’s
second international project is a
house in Bermuda.
The long-planned renovation
and expansion of the circa 1805
Georgian-style structure, owned
by innkeepers Delaey Robinson
and Andrea Dismont, is particular
ly challenging. It’s located across
from their business. Aunt Nea’s
Inn, in the town of St. Geotge,
which shares its designation as a
UNESCO World Heritage Site
with such treasures as the Taj
Mahal and Yellowstone National
Park. This means no fewer than
four agencies are monitoring the
project to ensure adherence to
strict guidelines intended to pre
serve the historical integrity of the
house’s exterior. Their task
undoubtedly is made easier by the
four 24-hour webcams capturing
the work in progress. New
episodes chronicling the project
begin Thursday, Feb. 12. on PBS
(check local listings).
Harbour View, as the house is
known, was one of several options
pitched to the show by Bermuda’s
Tourism Department. But the
unique set of challenges presented
by Robinson’s former bachelor
pad - including roof damage from
Hurricane Fabian in September,
window frames coated in lead
paint and the multiple permits
required - proved irresistible.
“No one wanted to get on the
roof because they were afraid the
slate would slide off,” local archi
tect Colin Campbell explains.
“Because ‘Old House’ is here, it
accelerated the renovation of this
space.”
Looking up at a roof full of
exposed beams with chunks miss
ing, holes covered by tarps and
slate visible through the timbers,
Campbell says, “A lot was done
with extraordinary care and not a
minute too soon. They look scarier
than they really are.”
Campell is on site to shoot a
scene for the second episode, in
which he goes over previous and
future representations of floor
plans with O’Connor. As cameras
roll, he explains the plan to restore
the building to its original color
and form and then start the transi
tion, which includes adding a two
story addition that will connect a
guesthouse to the main house.
Robinson and Dismont are
responsible for the cost, and a 12-
man crew eats up money very
quickly, even with the insurance
settlement and donations from
companies (a list of contributors is
available on the show’s Web site.
www.thisoldhouse.com).
Still, Dismont is determined not
to become overwhelmed. “I’m try
ing to just relax,” she says. “I’ve
got all these professionals. It’s
their stress.”
Indeed, a bit of stress can be felt
on the set as the number of takes

Norm Ahram (left) and Kevin
O’Connor of “This Old House”
sport the Bermuda shorts
favored by local businessmen as
episodes shot on the British
colony begin Thursday on PBS
(check local listings).
tor the scene between O’Connor
and Campell grows. The dialogue
is unscripted, and when O’Connor
gets a little wordy, he’s interrupted
by Russ Morash. the show’s crusty
creator, executive producer and
director. “Zip the lip,” he says.
‘Gan you say that in three words?”
The action begins again -
footage is free-flowing, with no
cuts in-between - and this time.
O’Connor is too loud.
“A little tensed up, Kevin?”
Russ teases. “Are you mad at us?
The love is gone.”
ThaL in facL is hardly the case,
despite O’Connor’s observation
that “(Russ) tells Norm he’s pol
ishing (his scenes). He tells me
I’m an idiot” There’s an easy
camaraderie among the cast and
crew, and Abram and O’Connor
spend some downtime discussing
renovations to the latter’s house.
It’s the same house whose wallpa
per problem led O’Connor, who
was working in sports finance, to
write in and ultimately be hired as
host 10 months ago.
