PAGE 2A FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS Sunday, February 8,2004 COURT from 1A littering on the highway. Driving with an open container of alcohol will cost a motorist $l2B. Paying the ticket can be risky due to unforeseen conse quences, say local criminal defense attorneys. “There are all sorts of things that can happen,” Hardy said. “You have to be careful.” Attorneys say insurance premiums likely will increase after a citation is received. The law holds those under 21 to a higher standard, allowing their driving privileges to be sus pended for certain traffic viola tions that adults could take care of with a fine and return to the road. An admission of guilt could place points on the offender’s license and trigger a license suspension. The relatively new crime of aggressive driving and unlaw ful passing of a school bus are considered six-point offenses by the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Disobeying a traffic control device is a three point offense. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 14 mph but less than 19 mph is a two-point offense. The state can suspend the license of any motorist who accumulates 15 or more points during a two-year period. Many local attorneys will listen to the circumstances sur rounding a traffic ticket at no cost and offer advice about whether it prudent to pay or fight the citation. For questions about a traffic ticket, call the Forsyth County Clerk of Courts office at (770) 781-2120. CENTER from 1A will be paying much more through the next 20 years after interest is calculated into the cost. Smith said he is excited about resuming the meetings which have become a focal point during election years. “It's the duty of the Republican Party to provide information and uncensored, unscreened public discussion,” he said. “Tuesday night’s meeting is intended to answer everyone’s questions about the justice cen ter proposal so that each citi zen can make an informed decision on this large commit ment of tax dollars.” Correction A story on page 2A of the Friday edition of the Forsyth County News incorrectly listed the date of U.S. Rep. John Linder’s planned open meeting at South Forsyth High School. The correct date of the event is Feb. 21 at the same location. We apologize for any inconvenience this caused our readers.
