From Staff Reports
Georgia Commissioner of
Agriculture Tommy Irvin is
cautioning Georgians to watch
for two cheeses packed in alu
minum tins because they have
the potential to be contaminat
ed with the bacterium that
causes botulism, a form of
food poisoning that can be
fatal.

All consumer packages of
the cheeses packed in the metal
tins are affected regardless of
the code date on the package.
The cheeses are being
recalled due to the label failing
to mention “Keep Refrigerat
ed."
Also, the manufacturer
failed to obtain Food and Drug
Administration prior approval
for its manufacturing process.
The cheeses have the poten
tial to be contaminated with
Clostridium botulinum, the
bacterium that causes botulism.
The cheeses should not be
eaten. Taste or smell cannot
indicate the presence of the
bacterium.
Botulism can cause the fol
lowing symptoms: general
weakness, dizziness, double
vision and trouble with speak
ing or swallowing. Difficulty in
breathing, weakness of other
muscles, abdominal distension
and constipation may also be
common symptoms. People
experiencing these problems
should seek immediate medical
attention.
Anyone who has purchased
either of these should return
them to the place of purchase
for a full refund.
“We do not know if these
cheeses were shipped to
Georgia. Our sanitarians will be
searching for them as part of
their regular inspections. If we
find any. we will make sure it is
removed from sale,” said Irvin.
