How to plant the right
flowers for your lawn
By Shay Smith
For the Forsyth County News
Q. Someone gave me a
large pot hill of blooming nar
cissus. They are finished
blooming and have lots of
leaves. Should I cut off the
leaves and plant them in the
yard now?
A. The green leaves supply
the bulbs with energy to bloom
next spring. By cutting them off,
you take away all of the poten
tial nourishment for the bulbs.
The best thing for you to do is
go ahead and plant the bulbs
outdoors (as soon as the ground
is dry enough) and they should
bloom for you next spring.
Q. My tulip bulbs are
beginning to pop up through
the thick leaf mulch that I put
over them in the fall. Do I
need to remove the mulch so
that they can go ahead and
bloom?
A. The mulch is serving as a
protective layer for the tulips.
You should wait until spring has
definitely arrived before moving
the mulch away from the
emerging bulbs. I'm just as
ready for spring to arrive than
anyone else, but I think we
should be patient and wait for
consistently warm days before
doing too much gardening.
Q. I’m ready to start shop
ping for some plants for my
yard. What are some factors
that I should consider before
going to the garden center
and purchasing everything
that looks pretty to me?
A. I'm glad that you asked
this question before going out
and purchasing plants that will
never successfully grow here.
First of all, remember that
Forsyth County is located in
Plant Zone 7. You need to
decide what you want out of
your landscape: to attract
wildlife, a formal and mani
cured landscape, a natural and
low-maintenance woodland
area. Do you have full sun. lots
of shade, available water, and

The TRUTH About Divorce
'And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall
make you free... Sanctify them through thy truth:
thy word is truth" John 8:32/John 17:17
Forsyth Baptist Church will be presenting a 5-week series
on the topic of divorce and related issues beginning on
Sunday February 29th through Sunday March 27th.
Worship service begins at 11:00a.m. The church meets at
Mashburn Elementary School. (Take Hwy 20 East from
Exit 14 approximately 2 miles, then left on Samples Road
at traffic light. School will be on the right.)
Some questions that will be addressed include:
1. Is it ever right to get a divorce?
2 Should a divorced person re-marry?
3. Should a minister unite a couple that includes a
divorced person?
4. How does God feel about divorce?
5. Should a divorced person be made to feel like a
2nd class person?
6. Is there such a thing as having more than one
living wife or husband?
7. How can I protect my marriage from divorce?
•NO ONE IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY IS IMMUNE FROM
I THE EFFECTS OF DIVORCE. UNFORTUNATELY, OUR
CULTURE HAS ALLOWED IT TO BECOME PREVALENT.
BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SO. I FOR ONE, WANT TO
HELP CHANGE THE DISCOURAGING STATISTIC THAT HALF
OF THE MARRIAGES IN THE UNITED STATES END IN
DIVORCE. IT CAN BE DONE. JOIN US AS WE HEAR THE
TRUTH FROM GOD’S WORD ON THIS SUBJECT THAT IS
SO VERY REAL AND RELEVANT TO US ALL.'

only small
space, or do
you have sev
eral acres that
you’d like to
landscape? All
of these are
questions that
you should ask
yourself before
deciding
which plants
to purchase.
Os course, there are many
qualified landscape designers
that will draw the plan and
install the landscape for you, but
if you intend to do it on your
own, at least have a rough plan
on paper. There are numerous
books and publications that you
could purchase, check out from
the library, or find online which
discuss landscaping. Both
Forsyth County libraries have
an excellent selection of
Horticulture books.
Q. I would like to have a
vegetable garden, but have a
lot of shade in my yard. Do
vegetables need full sun to
survive?
A. Most vegetables need
about eight hours of direct
sunlight a day to be produc
tive. Consider contacting a
local school, library, or some
other public facility and ask
them if you could establish
some raised bed vegetable gar
dens on the property.
Raised beds can be very
beautiful, especially if you
mix vegetables with herbs and
flowers. Besides providing
interest, people can learn
about gardening and you may
find them willing to pitch in
and help pull weeds or water
the garden in exchange for a
few juicy tomatoes. For more
