STATE from IB
"He just ran out of time

"It’s definitely an accomplish

So. he’s going to be a little

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS - Wednesday, February 2S, 2004 -1
SWIMS from IB
to No. 1 finishes that put them into consider
ation for All-American status.
South sophomore Matt Bartlett also
clinched two automatic All-American
berths, finishing second place in both the
100-yard backstroke (51.92) and the 100-
yard butterfly (50.65), while senior Michael
Kirkpatrick earned silver in the 100-yard
free (48.23).
According to Hunt, Kirkpatrick should
also have earned a bronze in the 50 free
instead of finishing fourth.
“The timing pad malfunctioned he
should have placed third,” said Hunt, of
Kirkpatrick’s recorded 22.04 finish. “As far
as I’m concerned he’s a 21-[second] man.
He had the meet of his life.”
The War Eagles’ Brett Ryan also scored
points during the competition, finishing 10th
in both the 100 fly and 50 free, as did
South’s first-ever State diving competitor,
Justin Boling who finished eighth with
290.8 points from the one-meter platform.
Sending their first-ever male competitors
to State, North’s 200-yard free relay team of
Tim Reeves, Stephen Rose, Philip Sanders
and Sam Mashbum swam hard, just missing
the preliminary cut with a 1:40.07.
On the girls side, South’s Megan Land
swam her way to a silver and All-American
consideration in the 50-yard free (24.48) and
finished fifth in the 100-yard free (53.61).
“Megan popped some good stuff,” noted
Hunt.
As did the Lady Eagles’ 200- (1:43.17)
and 400-yard (3:45.79) free relay teams,
which each finished fifth.
Elizabeth Kirby, Britney Simons and
Amanda Kettles also got on the score sheet,
each earning points for South.
"We moved from 13th to ninth in the
girls division (since last year]," said Hunt.
“So we’ve made some good improvements.”
For county competitors Central and
North, the meet gave each a chance to make
their mark, which they did through the Lady
Dawgs' Kelly Robinson and the Lady
Raiders’ Meg Basler, who each each took
top-10 finishes.
Robinson, a freshman, set a new school
record in swimming the 200-yard free in
2:01.50, while Basler completed the 100-
yard fly in 1:02.92.
Yet the day belonged undeniably to
South, who exceeded even the expectations
of Hunt.
“The team was so together,” said Hunt.
"They were rooting for each other, and hold
ing towels for each other and screaming
along with their coach.
“If they go beyond what 1 ask them to
do. how I can not be happy. I couldn't be
more pleased right now.”
