Houston court to summon 275 jurors in Lynn Turner trial
By Nicole Green
Staff Writer
Cobb and Houston County
court officials decided last
week to summon 275 jurors
for the poisoning murder trial
of Cumming resident Lynn
Turner.
The trial is scheduled to
begin in Houston County on
April 26. A judge ordered the
trial to be moved on Feb. 5
after he determined an unbi
ased jury pool could not be
found in Cobb County.
Lynn Turner is accused of
murdering her husband,
Glenn, who served as a
police officer until his death
by ethylene glycol poisoning
in 1995. The couple lived in
Cobb County at the time.
For the aborted Cobb trial,
125 jurors were summoned
on Feb. 2. Out of that num
ber, only eight had not heard
House to vote again on
marriage amendment
By Colby Jones
Staff Writer
The Georgia House of
Representatives is poised to
vote again on a proposed
amendment to the state consti
tution limiting marriage to
unions between men and
women.
Supporters of the amend
ment on Thursday failed to
generate the two-thirds majori
ty needed to place the issue of
a constitutional amendment
before state voters. The meas
ure failed by a vote of 117-50
three votes shy of the
super-majority required to
pass.
Forsyth County’s three rep
resentatives in the House
Republicans Jack Murphy and
Tom Knox of Cumming and
Jan Jones of Alpharetta
voted in favor of moving for
ward with the constitutional
amendment.
Georgia law already pro
hibits same-sex couples from
marry ing, but many conserva
tive lawmakers are concerned
about a recent judicial deci
sion by Massachusetts' highest
court declaring that state's
constitution requires the
issuance of marriage certifi
cates to couples of the same
sex.
San Francisco officials

through the media. Ethylene

received nationwide media
attention.
Cobb County court
administrator Skip Chesshire
and Houston County chief
deputy clerk Colleen
McClintick met in Perry, the
county seat of Houston, on
Monday to discuss arrange
ments for selecting a jury and
moving the trial.
McClintick previously
reported that out of a normal
jury pool of 250 people, only
110 show up for duty.
Many Houston County
residents are employees of
Robins Air Force Base and
move frequently.
The 275 jurors will not be
sequestered.
The courts also made
hotel arrangements for Cobb
despite a California law defin
ing marriage as between a man
and a woman.
President Bush weighed
into the debate last week by
encouraging Congress to alter
the United States Constitution
to prohibit homosexual mar
riages.
The attempt to amend
Georgia’s constitution will be
put to a vote a second time if a
majority of House members
vote to reconsider the issue as
expected.
Knox reported receiving a
large amount of correspon
dence in recent weeks about
the issue. An overwhelming
majority of local residents
support amending the Georgia
Constitution, he said.
The interest by state law
makers in the issue was
prompted by recent events on
the east and “left" coasts,
Knox said, referring to liberal
decisions by the
Massachusetts Supreme
Judicial Court and city offi
cials in San Francisco author
izing same sex marriages.
Those events are contrary
to the opinions of everyday
Americans. Knox said.
State Sen. Casey Cagle. R-
Gainesville. said he hopes his
colleagues in the House
approve the measure, which
was approved earlier in the
session by the Senate 40-14.

Accommodations for the
media were also discussed,
Chesshire said. Journalists
will be briefed on courtroom
coverage procedures at a
media day to be scheduled in
upcoming weeks.
Turner pleaded not guilty
to one count of murder. She
is accused of killing her hus
band using a sweet-tasting
substance found in antifreeze.
Glenn Turner’s death was
investigated after Lynn
Turner’s boyfriend, Randy
Thompson of Forsyth
County, died in 2001 in a
similar manner.
Both bodies were found to
contain high levels of ethyl
ene glycol, according to court
records.
