SWING from 4B
falter as the Cullman (Ala.)
Bearcats came back to beat
the War Eagles 7-3 at Foley
Field in Athens.
“We obviously wanted to
play better, but you've got to
start somewhere and, unfor
tunately, that’s where we’re
starting.” said South Forsyth
head coach Mike Strickland.
“So, we’re working on trying
to improve those things.”
War Eagle Josh Tate got
things going in the first
inning, reaching on an error,
then advancing to second on
a passed ball and later scor
ing on a single by Evan
Nissley.
Jamie Benjamin drove
Nissley home on a triple
before crossing home plate
himself on a sacrifice fly by
Joe White for a 3-0 War
Eagle lead entering the sec
ond.
But South Forsyth did not
have another base runner
until the bottom of the sixth
and. by that time. Cullman
had already exploded for six
runs three earned and
three unearned in the top
half of the frame for a 6-3
advantage.
“The sixth was kind of
our undoing,” said
Strickland. “It hurt, and
that's why we play the games
we know that there are a
lot of things we need to work
on ... Against a team like
that, you can’t have an inning
like that, where you lose
your defensive intensity and
you don’t take care of the
baseball."
Following another run
scored by Cullman in the top
of the seventh. South tried to
respond in the bottom half of
the inning. But despite put
ting runners on first and sec
ond with one out, the War
Eagles were unable to capi
talize as the Bearcats came
away with the 7-3 win.
Competing in Alabama’s
Class SA. Cullman has gone
a combined 78-23 the past
two seasons, including a sec-

“They know how to win
high school baseball games,”
said Strickland of the
Bearcats. "If you’ll hang in
there and play defense, gen
erally, the other team will let
you back in it at some point.
And that’s what we did."
Joe White pitched four
solid innings to start the
game before leaving when a
pre-determined pitch count
was reached. Matt Dalton
pitched the fifth, then got
into some trouble in the
sixth, when Zach Boling (L.
0-1) took the hill with no
outs and runners already on
base.
"Our pitchers have to
understand situations and
work ahead in the count,”
Strickland said.
“Defensively, we have to
make plays and we have to
be able to take care of the
ball ... just the little things.”
The War Eagles host
Cross Creek (Augusta)
tonight at 5:55 p.m.. before
Saturday afternoon's home
game against McEachern at 2
p.m.
Despite the loss on
Monday, Strickland knows
that a tough schedule now
will only help his team once
region play begins. And. with
several former South Forsyth
students now living in
Athens, playing at the
University of Georgia was a
good opportunity for players
and fans alike.
"It was a good experi
ence. It was a nice way to
open up. being able to go to
Foley." the War Eagle coach
said.
After playing South on
Friday, Cross Creek will
spend the night in town, then
face North Forsyth Saturday
in Coal Mountain. The
Raiders, incidentally, travel
to Campbell High School for
their season opener Friday at
5:55 p.m.

two-minute drill
Major league
players give
kids a treat at
Hitters Park
It’s not every day that a
youth baseball player can
watch a major leaguer in
action, but that’s exactly
what happened recently
when Hitters Park in
Cumming welcomed
Chicago Cubs pitcher and
Kyle Farnsworth and
catcher Michael Barrett,
along with Atlanta Braves
pitcher John Smoltz.
The day was especially
enjoyable for Bran Austin
the facility’s hitting
instructor and co-owner,
along with pitching instruc
tor Robbie Morrison
who grew up playing base
ball at Wills Park in
Alpharetta with both Cubs
players.
“That was real neat
seeing those guys come
from a small town like
Alpharetta to make it to the
big leagues,” Austin said.
“And just for them to be on
the same team, that’s pret
ty cool.”
Austin said he keeps in
touch with the players,
who live in Georgia in the
offseason.
For the children in
attendance, the hitting and
pitching exhibition was
quite a treat.
“I think we had more
Cubs fans than Braves
fans there," Austin said.
“Kyle threw in front of
everybody. He didn't air it
out, but he probably threw
85 or 86 and to the kids,
that’s like 100 mph.”
