Tyson to
consolidate
two plants
Springdale. Ark. Tyson
Foods. Inc. (NYSEtTSN) has
announced a plan to consoli
date its manufacturing opera
tions in Jackson. Mississippi
into the company’s facility in
Carthage. Mississippi. Tyson
acquired the Carthage facility
when it purchased Choctaw
Maid Farms in late
September. 2003, and since
that time, has undertaken a
comprehensive analysis of all
operations in the area to
determine how to most effec
tively maintain the competi
tiveness of its Mississippi
operations.
The approximately
85OXXM) birds currently being
processed weekly in Jackson
will now be processed at
Carthage, bringing the total
production at that facility to
about 2.3 million weekly.
New automated processing
equipment being installed in
Carthage will enable this pro
duction to be accomplished
with a total of approximately
1800 people, compared to the
2700 now employed in the
two plants combined.
According to Tyson Group
Vice President of Food
Service, Bill Lovette, “This
was an extremely difficult
decision, largely because it
involves team members, many
of whom have been with the
company a long time, and a
great community that has
always been supportive of our
industry. But after Choctaw
Maid came on board, we
found ourselves with excess
capacity in a very old facility.
We are also faced with a com
pelling need to install newer,
more automated processing
equipment, and it simply
makes more business sense to
invest that capital in the more
modem facility."
