Forsyth delegation OKs online sale of lottery tickets
By Colby Jones
Staff Writer
The Georgia House of
Representatives on Thursday
overwhelmingly approved a bill
allowing the online sale of lot
tery tickets.
Forsyth County's three
House delegates to the Gold
Dome Reps. Jack Murphy.
R-Cumming. Tom Knox, R-
Cumming, and Jan Jones, R-
Alpharetta voted in favor of
the measure.
If signed into law, Georgia
would become the first with an
online lottery, according to the
House Information Office.
Under the proposed online
system, residents could set up
an online computer account
with the state and make deposits
with cash, debit or credit cards.
The system would limit credit
card purchases to $5 a day and
would require the state to deter
mine whether a creator of an
account is eligible to play the
lottery.

"I think it will help lottery

Murphy agreed, saying. “If
we're going to have a lottery,
why don't we try every avenue
we can to play the lottery ."
Despite the minimal resist

Randy Hicks, president of the

"The other problem, and this
is true of lotteries in general, is
that studies show that it's the
people who can afford it least,
who spend the most. This
would encourage those same
people to now ring up a debt for
something that will not produce
a return on their dollar. This is
regressive taxation at its worst."

Lanierland offers star-studded
country lineup for 2004 season-

Lanierland Music Park’s
“Concerts in the Country” will
feature a mix of country legends
and newcomers for the 2004
season.
The lineup includes three
members of the Country Music
Hall of Fame Merle
Haggard, Loretta Lynn, and Ray
Price.
Three native Georgians,
Doug Stone, T. Graham Brown,
and Billy Currington, are slated
to appear during the nine-con
cert series. The blend of old and
new is an attempt to broaden the
appeal of the concert series,
according to manager Brenda
Jones.
"We wanted to include a
number of the young acts along
with the legends,” said Jones. "1
think we have one of our best
lineups this year.”
The concert venue made its
debut in 1970 on the farm of
C.E. Samples. Samples and
businessman Shorty Hamby
held the first concert, which fea

large circus tent. The tickets
were actually sold by the atten
