In the space of four short days. Tech managed to beat Duke in Durham, avoid the inevitable letdown and beat Florida State, and watch with glee as their archrivals in Athens became a national laughingstock. Can life get any better than this? A month ago, we observed that Tech had closed the gap on Duke. They played the Dbvils right down to the wire in Atlanta. Wednesday night, the Jackets finally made it over the hump. Tech's 76-68 win was its first over Duke in 15 games, stretching all the way back to Feb. 7. 1996. That's so long ago. Stephon Marbury was directing the Tech attack. Tech also became the first visiting team to win in the hyena pit known as Cameron Indoor Stadium in 41 games. Now. consider that Coach Paul Hewitt’s first three Tech teams lost in Durham by an average of 30 points, and you begin to grasp just how big this win was. Equally amazing was how Tech played down the stretch. Incredibly, they played like a team that expected to win. They made the plays. They remained calm. Come crunch time. Tech was forcing Duke into mistakes. Come crunch time. Luke Schenscher was scoring eight of his fourteen points. Jarrett Jack was scoring seven of WIN from IB While seniors Matt Goodall (75). and Joe Muntan (77). along with sophomore Brandon Baker (79), all fin ished in the 70s this weekend for the varsity, four junior var sity players Chandler Deloach (73), Matt Dorminy Georgia Corporation with its registered office located at 3915 River Club Drive. Marvin Lewis was hitting a crucial trey. It was a total team effort. No Jacket scored more than 15 points, but four hit double figures, and Lewis had nine. But when Duke, after bat tling from behind all night, finally tied the game at 56 with seven minutes left, with the crowd aroar and the arena rocking, you just knew the game was theirs. Except nobody told Tech. They took back the lead within 10 seconds, scoring 20 points over those final seven delicious minutes. • That’s hardly wilting under Duke’s famously relentless defensive pressure. The result was no fluke. Tech outplayed Duke in every phase of the game. Tech shot over 50 percent while holding Duke to 34 percent shooting. Tech made 5 of 12 threes, and held Duke to 8 of 29. Tech had more rebounds (37-33), assists (14-11), and blocked shots (11-6). And the Jackets harassed Duke's fabulous freshman, Luol Deng, into a hideous 1 for 14 shooting night. But here’s the most telling stat. Year in and year out. Duke prides itself on making more free throws than its opponents even (76) Mark Allmond (78) and Jack Jeffrey (79) also shot 70s for the War Eagles. With three players (Hoc ker. Goodall and Muntan) already getting looks from collegiate squads. Wednesday night, Duke attempted 19 free throws. Tech made 19. Pretty heady stuff. At least heady enough to con vince veteran observers that Tech would have trouble coming back down to earth Saturday against Florida State. And they did. It was a struggle all the way. But this time, the Jackets won, 63-60, and that’s the point. They won exactly the type of game they used to lose. Not that they didn’t try. They posted only 25 points in the first half. They surren dered 11 steals and commit ted a staggering 22 turnovers. Far from getting everyone into the flow, as they had against Duke, they relied on Lewis, Jack, and B. J. Elder for 49 points. The rest of the squad could only muster 14. So how did the Jackets win? Well, the defense never rested. They forced the Seminoles into a putrid shooting exhibition (19 of 60, a robust 31 percent), and a despicable, and unbeliev able, 6of 31 frprn three point land. In short. Tech ran the gamut last week. They played an outstanding game against a great opponent on the road, and a fair game against a fair opponent at home. And they rang up two wins. Tech finished with a 9-7 conference record, good enough for third place in the ACC. Tech hasn't seen such heights since that '96 season. chance at the next level. “Out of our top 12 players, every single one of them can play somewhere," said Loveless. But for right now, all the focus is on what they can accomplish this season. Code The initial registered office of the corporation is located at 6025 Shiloh Road Suite E. Tech is back, and the future is bright. And though Hewitt is far too fine a gentleman to revel in someone else’s misfor tune, the same can’t be said for the rest of the Tech Nation. No doubt, great glee accompanied the release of Jim Harrick, Junior’s Basketball 101 final exam. As if Bluto and D-Day had stolen the master, the übiquitous exam appeared everywhere last week, from the New York Times to ESPN’s Web site. How sweet. The moment of Tech’s greatest recent tri umphs dovetails with Georgia’s greatest embar rassment. Actually, the embarrass ment lays at the feet of UGA CEO Michael F. Adams, the man who foisted Jim Harrick Sr. upon the Athletics Department, then overlooked the University’s anti-nepo tism rule to enable Junior to join Daddy. Every time CEO Adams ventures into athletics, the results gladden the hearts of Techies everywhere, and last week was no exception. Hard to imagine Tech packing so many good tid ings into four short days. Life is good, you bet. Cumming, Forsyth County, , t RUN from 1B eye catches are generally very good for those who can reach their spawning areas. Though the walleye’s natural food tends to be their cousin the yellow perch, they feed primarily on shad or blueback herring in Lake Lanier. Therefore, the best baits up in the rivers are live emerald shiners, night crawlers, or natural min nows. Lanier walleyes are eas ily recognized by their dark olive color with white stomachs. They may appear lighter on top if they have spent much time in muddy or stained water. The lower lobe of their tail is usually tipped with white, but the most notice able feature is always the eyes from which their name is derived. Walleyes have large, glassy, opaque eyes that glow under lights at night, giving them an eerie look. A special pigment in the retina of the eye causes walleyes to be very light sensitive, which often makes them less aggressive on bright, sunny days in clear w ater. Despite the difficulty of reaching fishing spots, or finding enough eager fish to catch, Lanier walleyes are the first fish to spawn each year. Most of them weigh two to five pounds and are easi ly the best table-fare of any fish that swims in Lake Lanier.
