Regular reassessment helps patients succeed
DEAR ABBY: A reader asked how a person
can tell if psychiatry is “working." We
would like to offer some suggestions.
The patient or client should have a
specific plan for recovery. The thera
pist —a clinical social worker, psy
chologist, psychiatrist, or marriage and
family therapist should teach cop
ing skills so the person can assemble a
“coping toolbox.” Patients should
expect to do behavioral homework
between counseling sessions.
Sometimes medication is needed; often it is
not. Most uncomplicated depression and anxiety
problems respond favorably within 10 to 20 ses
sions. Additional complicating factors may
extend the number of sessions, but by the 20th
session the person should see definite improve
ment. »
Just "talking about" problems is helpful, but
not usually enough to make and maintain
changes. It is also not generally helpful to focus
only on the past/childhood w-hen the' problems
are occurring today. Therapists and clients can
be sure that goals are being met by assessing
behavior and emotional changes at regular inter
vals.
We hope this information is helpful.

SON, MSW, LCSW, COSTA MESA, CALIF.
DEAR DR. ABELL AND MS. SIMPSON:
Thank you for lending your expertise to answer
this often-asked question. People who are emo
tionally vulnerable are not always in the best
position to evaluate their own progress. I'm sure
your letter will be appreciated by many readers.
DEAR ABBY: 1 am 30 years old and have been
married for four years. I have known since I was
a teen-ager that 1 never wanted to have children.
My husband was well aware of this when we

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY
(March 11). You’re sure of
your position and play your
various roles beautifully. In
the springtime, family brings
overwhelming joy. Vacation in
July is eye opening. Gemini
and Pisces have strong roman
tic pull and may entice you
this summer this could lead
to marriage. Volunteer your
time generously in August.
You get unexpected perks that
last all year long. Your lucky
numbers are: 2,4.7. 27 and
44.
ARIES (March 21-April 19).
You've got a running start on
anything you’d like to accom
plish. Assume nothing. You
could jump to a conclusion
that is exaggerated or just
plain wrong. Before you trust
what you see. get the whole
story. A Cancer tells the truth.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20).
You’ll have to be more protec
tive of yourself it’s your
time! Say “no." and then,
don’t even Avorry what others
will think. If they're disap
pointed. perhaps they were
taking you for granted to
begin with.

CHILDLESS BY CHOICE IN FLORIDA
DEAR C.8.C.: While parenthood can be joyful
and rewarding, it requires commitment and sac
rifice. The bundle from heaven cannot be
returned to sender if the recipients change their
minds. It would be interesting to see if baby-sit
ting for his nephew would change your hus
band's mind or yours. However, if you can
not come to a meeting of the minds, a divorce
may indeed be on the horizon.
DEAR ABBY: My marriage is pretty much
over. My wife and I can’t get along, and all the
counseling we've had didn't help.
I feel “naked" without my wedding band and
am wondering if it is proper for me to wear
another ring that has personal sentimental value
on my ring finger. I hope this isn't a dumb ques
tion.
TOM IN NEW YORK
DEAR TOM: No question is dumb if it's sin
cere. You may wear any kind of ring you wish
on your ring finger but please be aware that a
ring on the third finger of the left hand is a sig
nal that the wearer is “unavailable."
PS. Many divorced people feel naked when
they remove their wedding ring for the last time,
but that stage usually passes by the time the tan
line fades.
Under the stars' gaze
GEMINI (May 21-June 21).
Relationships are at that point
where more information will
be very helpful. Ask ques
tions. and divulge your own
heart. A Virgo especially is
desperate to know how you
really feel. Vehicle mainte
nance is important.
CANCER (June 22-July
22). You're looking for a
lucrative opportunity but
instead may find something
that seems like a lot of fun
no pay. Jump in anyway.
Things change later. Get rid
of junk. You’ll feel lighter. A
Libra wants to know you bet
ter.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). A
life filled with an overriding
sense of obligation is a total
drag. Consider that something
you’re clamping on to might
be really clamping on to you
instead. Release it. A Scorpio
can help you do an even bet
ter job.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22).
Health continues to be a pri
ority. and rightfully so.
Whatever it takes to keep that
gorgeous glow. Control your
temper. Ask for help. A
Sagittarius is an exquisite
coach. Schedule workouts
with loved ones.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23).
Life is not a race but an expe
rience. There's no need to
force things. Let natural
curiosity drive you. You've
got fantastic timing and make
propositions that get immedi
ate acceptance. A Capricorn
helps you hone an idea.
baby boy last summer, and sudden-
I ly my husband has changed his
mind and wants children too.
I know I am not parent material.
I am impatient with children and
generally uncomfortable around
them. I do not want my life to be
defined by children, nor do I want
to give up the lifestyle I enjoy to
raise them. What can 1 do? Is a
! divorce pending?
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov.
21). It's a great day to try new
experiences on and see what
you like. You can always
change your mind later.
Independent contractors get
work from a new source.
Charitable acts are doubly
repaid. An Aquarius has a
crush on you.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-
Dec. 21). Saying “yes" too
often is a danger. You need
freedom to pursue your ideas.
Stop committing yourself to
what you don't want to do! An
authority figure knows you’re
ready to move up. A Pisces
can help you negotiate.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.
19). Keep seeing the big pic
ture, and don't let yourself get
bogged down in the details.
Anyone who would love you
more if you had more money
is going to be trouble. Hold
out for true love. An Aries
pays you the respect you
deserve.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18). On this slow morning,
boredom is telling you some
thing. Figure out what you
need. This afternoon, you can
tempt, tease or persuade oth
ers to do exactly what you
wish. Controversy enlivens
you.
PISCES (Feb. 19-Mareh 20).
Work requires tedious effort,
but it’s worth it in the end. A
Gemini is your creative touch
stone. You're a people magnet,
though you might rather be
alone. Don't underestimate
the power of groups.
