LUNG from 1A
On Wednesday, Trent illus
trated for the children how
much tar collects in the lungs
of a smoker by pouring
molasses into a measuring
cup. Then the kids received a
lesson disguised as a treat: a
Tootsie Roll. Trent instructed
the children to chew the
candy like chewing tobacco
and try not to swallow any of
the chocolate. After a few
minutes, the students realized
that it is impossible to spit
out all the "juice.” Some of it
slides down the throat, caus
ing throat cancer.
“I didn't realize how
much you swallow until 1
tried it," Trent said.
Unlike some of their par
ents and grandparents, these
children have always known
that tobacco kills.
They may not have known
the biological effects of
smoking prior to this week,
but all the children were
aware that smoking is a
health hazard.
Mikhayla Martinez. 10,
asked a question that kept
reoccurring throughout the
"no smoking" presentation.
"If people know that it is
bad. why do they make ciga
rettes and cigars?” Martinez
asked.
"It's money," Caton said.
