Swimsuit shopping not enjoyable for women
After performing my civic
duty by downing half a
box of Girl Scout cook
ies. I headed out to my
favorite one-stop shopping
store to do my weekly shop
ping.
I stopped dead in my
tracks when I saw' them: rack
upon rack and a large wall of
this season’s newest swim
suits.
No grown woman can pos
sibly enjoy this time of year.
Even if you are in relatively
good shape, trying on a swim
suit is no simple matter. If you
are a woman, you are proba
bly nodding your head
emphatically.
If you are male you are
probably scratching your head
and wondering what I am talk
ing about. After all. when a
man needs a swimsuit, he does
not even have to try it on. The
most he does is to hold it up to
his torso, but not if anybody is
looking.
Can you imagine a man
choosing six to 10 different
swimsuits, each one in two or
three different sizes, then

Though I never saw her
face or heard her voice, the
parable she authored will

Q. My Hawthorne
plants look horrible. They
are covered in dark spots.
What is it and what should
I do about it?
A. It sounds like your
Indian Hawthorne plants have
Entomosporium leaf spot.
Symptoms on foliage are dis
tinct circular red lesions with
gray centers forming as the
lesions expand. Dark specks
(fruiting bodies of the fungus)
may be visible within the
gray centers.
Cultural practices are
important to control
Entomosporium leaf spot.
Infection is favored by free
moisture on the leaves. Avoid
wetting the foliage when
watering. Selective pruning
can increase air circulation
through the plant and reduce
disease incidence. Severely
infected leaves on the plant
and those fallen on the
ground should be removed
from the area and thrown
away.
Infection occurs primarily
in the milder weather of the
spring and the fall.
Fungicides are most effective
during this time. Daconil,
Funginex (triforine) and
Banner (Immunex) work best.
Susceptibility to leaf spot
development varies by culti
var. If you have to replace
some of them, choose one of
the following resistant vari-

can you pick up a new pair of

That is it. No matter what
brand, color or pattern I bring
home, he is happy. Well, not
happy exactly, but then most
men are never exactly happy
about clothes, are they?
When I was growing up,
you wore either a bikini or a
one piece.
Basically, you donned a
bikini to tan your tummy, and
a one piece when you were
actually going to swim.
Nowadays, there is a plethora
of swimsuit styles.
There is the very popular
tankini. These are for when
you want to feel like you are
wearing a bikini, but pretty
much all of your tummy is
hidden from view.
A designer with a psychol
ogy degree no doubt thought
of this style.
There are also hundreds of
different types of one-pieces.
All of these can now be pur
chased with extra padding
where you want it. Many have
worn in a movie.
Aunt Elsie was, accord
ing to her niece, a good
Methodist woman who
taught Sunday School and
regularly baked goodwill
cakes.
She was a plain, salt-of
the-earth woman who pre
ferred sensible shoes, sup
port stockings and flannel
gowns.
But that fancy negligee
caught her eye and, in a
moment of unexplained
weakness, she bought it. For
the rest of her life, she
adored that gown which she
stored in a cedar chest at the
foot of her bed.
But she never wore it.
Never took the tags off.
Instead, she spent the next

* Divide and transplant
summer- and fall-blooming
perennials (astilbe, aster,

best in well-drained soil with
plenty of humus. Astilbe,
hosta and bleeding heart will
bloom in the shade.

There are also more and
more "build your own” swim-
30 years saving it for a “spe

when she was feeling blue -
she took the gown out of the
cedar chest to admire it.
When she died, her daughter
realized that her mama had
one last chance to wear her
beloved peignoir set.
That’s how Aunt Elsie,
the practical Methodist,
came to be buried in a white
chiffon gown and robe fit for
a Hollywood queen and
stunned the other Methodists
as well as the Baptists who
came for the viewing.
Somehow, I suspect that
wasn’t the special occasion
she had been waiting for.
Time just got away from her.

us, the "T” word is a frighten
ing thought. Last year when I
was at Lake Lanier Islands
with my kids, a beautiful
young woman had on a bright
yellow teeny tiny bikini top
and an almost not-there bright
yellow teeny tiny thong bot

The life guards watched

There have been times,
though, that I haven’t bought
something because it was
impractical and 1 asked
myself, "But where will 1
wear it?" 1 won’t do that
again.
If a beautiful item speaks
to my heart. I’ll buy it and
then find a special occasion.
Shortly after hearing this
story. I was passing the shoe
department of an upscale
store. Dark colored shoes
dominated the scene but a
pair of shiny, red patent
leather, knee high boots
popped out. They glimmered
like a ruby in the midst of

purchase, much less wear cer

My father suggested sec
tioning off areas of the beach
for different types of swim
suits. Not a bad idea: Thong
wearers swim here, bikinis
here, all others in this section.
I did not try on swimsuits
on that particular shopping
trip I was just having too
positive of a day.
Inevitably, though I will
have to make that pilgrimage
to the fitting room armed
with loads of shiny, nylon
swimsuits.
There is one related thing I
never mind trying on and pur
chasing: a cover-up.
