Man f s perfect pedigree is marred by tablemanners
DEAR ABBY: I’ve been seeing “Matt,” a 31-
~1,l i i r__ ..
year-old investment banker, for a
couple of months. He’s caring, kind,
intelligent and successful —a won
derful person. After prep school, he
went to an Ivy League college. All
things he is everything I
have been looking for in a mate.
Then we went out to dinner and I
watched him eat. Abby, Matt has the
worst table manners I have ever seen.
He holds his fork like a caveman and
slurps his food.
My parents and grandparents taught me
proper etiquette. 1 was brought up to believe
that the way you conduct yourself, especially
at the table, is a reflection of your upbringing.
Call me shallow, but Matt's bad table man
ners are close to being a deal-breaker for me.
I don’t know what to do. Frankly. I don’t want
to be the one to teach him table manners.
Should 1 con him into an etiquette class or
is that too sneaky?
DATING A CAVEMAN
DEAR DATING: Con him? Speak up and
tell this man exactly what you have told me.
You’ll be doing him a tremendous favor.
People are judged in business as they are
socially —by the manners they do (or do not)
display. Better he should hear it from you.
And if you locate an etiquette class, offer to
attend with him Don’t sacrifice an otherwise
perfect relationship over a flaw that is fixable.
DEAR ABBY: I have been married for 11
years. My father passed away this past
December. Because of this, my mother, who
lives next door, has been sleeping at our
house at night. This is causing my husband to
become resentful. He says he no longer has
any privacy.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY
(March 17). Explore your
unique style. Knowing yourself
well will help you win people
over. June brings money and
travel even a road trip will
satisfy your hefty need for
adventure. Educational
endeavors are lucky in the
summer, especially if you are
sure to include some seeming
ly frivolous studies. Gemini
and Scorpio love suits you.
Your lucky numbers are: 10.3,
22.54 and 17.
ARIES (March 21-April 19).
That light inside you has
turned up the wattage, so
expect some attention. Sure,
you don't look like you used
to, but being comfortable with
who you are now will make
you the most attractive you
have ever been in your whole
life!
TAURUS (April 20-May 20).
Ask for an outside view of
your performance at work so
that you know exactly what
you are doing. One opinion
isn’t necessarily correct, so get
two. Tonight, a mellow attitude
makes someone wonder what
you're thinking.

for a few weeks. If she's still afraid to sleep
alone, suggest she adopt a pet. The sooner she
asserts her independence, the better she will
feel. You'll be doing both your mother and
your husband a favor.
DEAR ABBY: Lately, my aunt, "Brenda,”
has been overly strict with my cousin,
“Emily.” She won’t let Emily talk on the
phone, go to movies you get the idea.
Once, because Emily lost the padlock for her
gym locker, she was grounded for three
weeks, lost her phone and computer privi
leges, and had to take all of her pictures out of
her locker.
My family knows this is wrong, but every
one's afraid to say anything. Is there anything
I can do to help Emily?
CONCERNED COUSIN IN
WISCONSIN
DEAR CONCERNED COUSIN: The pun
ishment should fit the crime, and it appears
that Emily’s mother has gone way overboard.
The problem with trying to keep a child a vir
tual prisoner is that most of them will rebel
sooner or later. It would be a kindness if you
would ask the other adults in your family to
speak to your Aunt Brenda. She needs to
learn more effective parenting techniques.
Under the stars ’ gaze
GEMINI (May 21-June
21) Give your instincts a
workout. When you don't
know which way to go. come
up with an intuitive opinion,
whether you feel that you
genuinely have one or not.
Tonight, you're in for flirty
fun tonight.
CANCER (June 22-July
22) Language barriers are
not only between people who
come from different parts of
the world. Emotions some
times don't translate into
words as nicely as one would
like. Use your compassion to
decode a message.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You
have away of bringing the
whole room up with your
energy. Work your magic in
the boardroom, at the job site
or in the cafeteria. The every
day locations deserve your
best just as much as the spe
cial places you go.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22).
Distraction is the enemy.
Anything you do to numb
yourself is best avoided. Pay
attention to your inklings.
They lead you in business,
help you interact successfully
with family and show you
how you can feel the most
fulfilled.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-OcL 23).
New and improved regimens
bear a striking resemblance
to the old ones. That's
because you're cycling ideas
you explored before. If you
can adopt someone else’s
thinking for a minute, you're
wiser for the consideration.
from school every day. She would
like to start staying at her own
house at night again, but it is still
difficult for her. What should I
do?
LOST DAD, MAY LOSE
HUSBAND
DEAR LOST: Encourage your
mother to start sleeping at home.
Ease the transition by having your
older children sleep at her house
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21).
There is no easy way to win
but if there were, you
wouldn’t get that fabulous rush
you get from winning! Advice
for a troubled work situation:
Just let go of your need to fig
ure everything out. Travel
improves a love relationship.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-
Dec. 21). You might consider
someone a bully at first, but if
you get to know him or her.
you'll find simply a person
who is doing the best he or she
can under the given circum
stances. You've been through
emotional thunderstorms.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.
19). There is a flurry of activi
ty. and none of it seems to be
about you. Giving of yourself
feels so good, you might get
caught in a habit of never
receiving and that’s bad.
Practice loving what you get.
as well as loving what you
give.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18). When you've had enough,
you can feel it in every fiber of
your being. So why is it that
you keep getting in over your
head? It could be an addiction
to adrenaline! Tonight, the
desire to get in front of the
group is strong.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20).
In love, easier is not necessari
ly better; challenge is satisfy
ing. You find out what you are
made of when pressed to the
limit. Don't back down too
fast. Business that has the fam
ily touch is lucky. Call your
mom.
