Nobody does it better than Keith Jackson
Here's what I feel are some
of the best and worst
things in sports today.
Best Current Major League
Baseball Player: Alex
Rodriguez. A-Rod continues
to be a good role model for
today's youth and has man
aged to bank $25 million per
year in the process.
The Yankees' third base
man has never been linked to
steroids, gambling, adultery or
any other character flaw
shared by many of today's big
names.
Worst: Any of several
dozen who hit .240. play aver
age defense and cash checks
of $5 million per season.
This type of player usually
signs a contract for l() times
his worth and screams to rene
gotiate when he has an aver
age year. Never heard of a guy
who offered to return money
when he has a sub-par cam
paign.
Best TV Announcer: Al
Michaels. Stays calm until the
action calls for excitement.
Those guys who scream into
the microphone "And there's
the opening kickoff!!!!!!"
leave me worn out. Michaels
also does his homework which
is makes him the best in the
business. He's always pre-
SOCCER from IB
The error proved a painful
ending to a strong display by
the Bulldogs, who proved the
better team early .
After each side manufac
tured early chances. Central
drew first blood when
Whittington beat Pius’ keeper
to a long ball from Spencer
Williams. Reaching the
chipped pass first. Whittington
rounded the charging Lion
keeper to slot the ball into an
open goal.
The strike hardened the
Dawgs' resolve as Central took
control late in the half and
entered halftime with confi
dence.
Yet the second half opened
inauspiciously for Central, as
defender P.K. Graff found his
way into the referee's book
after a late challenge on a
streaking Pius attacker. But
Pius couldn't find away
through Escamilla who saved
the ensuing free kick and sub
sequent rebound.
Central's luck again held
firm with 29 minutes left when
Pius fired w ide left on a penal
ty kick after Williams had han
dled the ball in the Bulldog
penalty area.
Yet Pius finally broke
through 10 minutes later, when
Fetic was harshly ruled to have
brought down an attacker near
the Central penalty area, earn
ing the defender an ejection.
Despite the dubious call.
Fetic could only watch from
the bench as Pius bent the
ensuing free kick into the
upper right corner of the
Bulldog goal, knotting the
score at 1 -1.
Even with 10 players.
Central continued to fight on
but couldn't pose a consistent
attacking threat as Pius pushed
forward in search of the win
ner.
Finally, the Lions’ pressure
paid off when they snatched

Worst: Billy Packer. Just
comes off as arrogant to me. If
he knew as much about bas
ketball as he leads us to
believe, he'd still be coaching.
Best College Football
Play-by-Play Announcer:
Keith Jackson. I love home
spun humor when its woven
into the telling of a story and
that’s what has endured
Jackson to audiences for
decades.
He isn’t afraid to be him
self while describing the
action. The phrases “Whoa
Nelly!" and “Fuuuumble!" are
Jackson trademarks. And the
man never ages, physically or
vocally.
Worst: Charlie
McAlexander. The former
South Carolina football
announcer was fired by the
Gamecocks because he wasn't
partial enough to the home
team. Can’t say that makes a
lot of sense to me. but he was
definitely dull.

Central as the host Lady Lions
downed the Lady Dawgs 3-0.
Pius dominated from the
start, scoring five minutes into
the contest before striking
twice more in the opening

cruised to a comfortable lead.
The Lady Dawgs (7-1-1, 3-

playing Pius to a stalemate in
the second half but couldn't
find the net as they suffered
their first defeat of the season.

Best Ending To a High
School Basketball Game:
Apalachee’s basket at the
buzzer. It happened less than
two ago at the Class
A A boys tournament quarter
finals in Rome.
Leading by one one with
seven seconds remaining,
Coosa missed the front end of
a one-and-one opportunity.
Apalachee’s Kelly Walton
rebounded, dribbled quickly
up the court, spotted 6-foot-8
Tyler Whatley unguarded at
the free throw line and tossed
a 15-foot pass.
Whatley caught the ball
with his back to the basket,
spun 180 degrees and sank the
shot as the buzzer sounded. I
still get goose bumps thinking
about it. Those :07
reminded me of why I do
what I do for a living.
Worse: Any lopsided game
that causes the losing coach to
empty his bench midway the
final quarter. Bad basketball is
really ugly.

coach Sid Bramblett. "I saw a
lot of stuff w e can w ork on.”
Bramblett was most frus
trated with his team’s marking
ability after Pius scored all
three goals after deflections in
the Central penalty area.
“We let them have three lit
tle trash goals," said Bram
blett. “We just missed some
marks. [After the deflections]
our players were looking to get
back on offense instead of
playing defense."
Still, the Central coach was
pleased with his team’s refusal
to give in during a strong sec
ond half.
“We played a lot better in
the second half." said Bram
blett. “We just didn’t play our
best game in the first."

Best Sports Movie of All
Time: "Brian’s Song." No
human being has ever watched
Brian Piccolo’s story dry

The scene where Gayle
Sayers sits on Piccolo’s bed
near the end is the most touch

are renowned for their refusal
to give up. Sayers encourages
his friend to "Hang in there.

Lady Eagles pick up win
Last season, a 1-0 loss at
the hands of Riverwood cost
South Forsyth's Lady Eagles a
trip to the state tournament
not this year.
South made certain this
game would provide no stum
bling blocks, taking out the
Lady Raiders 4-1, Tuesday
night in Atlanta.
Ashley Bostic supplied two
strikes, as the No. 8-ranked
Lady Eagles (7-0-1. 4-0)
remained undefeated.
“It was tough, but we
played with a lot of enthusi
asm. which helped us over
come a good team." said South
head coach Ken Gilmore.

South got off to a strong
start, grabbing a 1-0 lead, but
Riverwood, equalized in the
first half.
"When they tied it, it was
an awakening for us," said
Gilmore, whose team fired
back with three unanswered
goals as the Lady Eagle
defense clamped down on
Riverwood's attackers.
"(Right fullback] Maggie
Holahan played really well,”
noted Gilmore. "She closed
down [a Riverwood attacker]
so well, that she moved to the
other side of the field ”
With this win under their
belts. South readies for another
tough region game tonight
against Tucker (at North

Dacula and Mil ton.
"We've got a lot of tough
games ahead." said Gilmore.

Tuesday night at Riverwood,
as they finished in a 1-1 dead

The No. 9-ranked War
Eagles (7-1-1. 3-0-1) grabbed
an early lead on Nelson
Alvarez's goal and continued
to control possession against
the Raiders.
But missed opportunities
allowed Riverwood to knot the
game at 1-1 on a late penalty
kick.
"The guys are a little disap

said South head coach Matt
Fiedler.
