SOCCER from 1C
“You certainly miss
Brooke up front, but she did
a good job at the back,” said
Gilmore. “She’s the kind of
player who steps up and
says, ‘Coach I’ll do what you
need.’ And you want that in a
senior.”
While the defense held
the Lady Tigers in check,
Sarah Matty stepped in to
give South a 1-0 lead in the
first half —a lead that
looked like it might hold
throughout as South and
Tucker struggled to find
many chances.
Playing a midfield game,
the Lady Eagles’ Stephanie
Pope was forced to go it alone
for much of the day in attack.
But Pope's efforts were
finally rewarded late in the
game, when midfielder Gia
Rankart pulled free of her
marker and whipped in a cross
that a Tucker defender turned
back towards her own goal.
Jumping on the opportunity.
Pope beat the Tucker keeper to
the ball, sliding in to nudge
the ball home and give South
to a 2-0 lead with 2:20 left in
the game.
“I told her she slid into
home," chuckled Gilmore.
The late score clinched the
outcome and extended the
Lady Eagles’ unbeaten streak
to nine games.

scoreless until the final minute.
Morgan Judy and Michelle
King each scored as North (6-
5, 1-2) built a 2-0 lead midway
through the second half.

Adkins of Cumming, Ga„ won
a controversial victory in last
Saturday’s Mobile Register
100 Southern All-Stars truck
race at Mobile International
Speedway.
Adkins, driver of the No.
01 Chevrolet, started from the
tail-end of the field of 19
trucks. After a restart on lap
96, Adkins was running fourth
behind Jody Knowles, Okie
Mason and Blake Streetman.
With two laps remaining in
the 100-lap race, Adkins
moved into the second spot
behind Knowles. As the field
exited turn four. Adkins, who
was running a lower line than
Knowles, bumped the rear of
Know les’ No. 98, causing it to
slip.
"1 started dead last and
came all the way up to first,”
said Adkins. “It was a big
effort between the crew and
engine builder, Wayne Evans,
working hard that did it.”
It appeared that Knowles,
of Tyrone, Ga„ was on his way
to victory lane until the bump
ing incident.
"We had a good truck, but
it didn't work out," said
Knowles. “I don't know what
kind of racing you call that.

Covenant’s Brittany Schwendenman and
Montana Keig packed the middle with a strong
defensive effort. The Lady Rams’ best opportu
nity to score came on a set piece near the end
of the game. Setting up an indirect kick just
outside the penalty area. But the Bridgeway
keeper saved a Jennifer Bower shot at the near
post.
Shortly after the indirect kick, Covenant’s
Whitney Stinebaugh was fouled hard and had
to come out of the game with less than a
minute to play. Yet Stinebaugh and the rest of
the Lady Rams were ready for their next con
test against American Heritage (score not avail
able at deadline).
