Deciphering the post-game interview
It's almost impossible to
make any sense at all out of
March Madness. I mean,
where else does the higher
seed have the lower number?
Where else do they play all
the games in regions named
after locales yet to host a
game?
And if that's not enough,
just try understanding the
post-game coach and player
speak. Rather than illuminat
ing key points of competition,
the wordsmiths become mas
ters of obfuscation.
But no matter. After hours
of exhaustive study, with com
plete confidence and candor in
clarifying the conflicts, we
now interpret what the nota
bles had to say during the first
four days of the Tournament:
Phil Martelli. St. Joseph's
coach: "Some coaches elevate
themselves above all others.
Bobby Knight is one of them
w ho deserve to be called
'Coach.'"
Meaning I'll tell you what
Billy Packer, that's P-A-C-C-
K-E-R. deserves to be called
after we destroy his alma
mater from the all mighty
ACC on Thursday night.
Bobbs Knight. Texas Tech
coach "1 enjoy watching St.
Joseph s because of their
unselfishness and how hard
they play They’re unique to
watch because of the way they
pass to each other, the way
thev defend, and the roles they
play."
Meaning It I talk up St.
Joe's, maybe nobody will
notice that I haven't been to
the Sweet Sixteen in about a
dozen years
DRAGWAY from IB
used a telepathic .508 react to
win.
Seeing he had some room
on the finish line. Martin
slowed his car a tad to 8.67,
72.96 mph (8.62 dial).
Turner s car was spot on. but
second across the finish line
w ith a 9.14.71.77 mph effort
(9 13 target). Casey Free (15
years old. Sugar Hill) and
Thomas Davis-Cox (14 years
old. Buford) were the semi
final pair.
A new class. Sport
Compact, was put together for
the 2004 Atlanta Dragway
season.
A group of racers headed
by Kevin Davis from
Blairsville got together and
helped make the class happen.
Tim Houghland, from
Buford, marched through the
rounds, meeting local favorite
Erie "Buford Heavy" Duncan
in the final Thinking he need
ed a good reaction time to
win. Houghland "squeezed"
the tree too hard in his 'O2
Focus SVT. red-lighting his
chances of victory away with
a 433 react and a 17.02,
84 48-mph shot (16.65 dial).
Duncan also went through
rounds in his high mile
(200,000 plus) '97 Cavalier,
and earned the first Summit /
Snap-On ET Series Sport

Mike Krzyzewski. Duke
coach: "Andre Barrett of
Seton Hall is one of the top 10
players in the country. I don't
think he scored in the first
half. That gave us a big
boost."
Meaning: Like we needed
a boost. Hey, we won our first
two games by 63 points. I
could take the Atlanta Hawks
to the Sweet Sixteen. After all.
I’m not Bobby Knight.
Andre Barrett. Seton Hall
guard: "Against a team like
Duke, the way they were
guarding me, every opportuni
ty I had. I had to make. I think
they put the zoom on me.”
Meaning: I got no clue
what went on out there, but
I'm sure glad it's over.
Jim Boeheim. Syracuse
coach: "I'm going to enjoy
this win over Maryland
tonight, and worry about
Alabama tomorrow."
Meaning: I'd have an
excuse losing to Stanford. But,
geez. Alabama is a higher, er.
lower seed. What if I'm out
coached by Mark Gottfried?
Kevinn Pinkney. Nevada
forward: “When Todd Okason
hit a couple 3’s. Gonzaga's
players started looking at the
scoreboard. The last time they
looked, the game was over.”
Meaning: They've
mouthed off for years about
getting a better seed. Well.
Compact Winner's trophy
awarded by Atlanta Dragway
with his 18.92. 72.52 mph
pass (19.02 dial). Kevin Davis
('96 Eclipse, Blairsville) was
the semi-final finisher.
Buford gave part of the

Smith of Hedman Hedders.
"We've got a special Hedman
Hedder on this car."

Trent Johnson, Nevada

I got playing for me are pretty
good players.”
Meaning: You know, these
guys I got playing for me are
pretty good players.
Bobby Gonzalez,
Manhattan coach. "You can
get a stop in a key situation,
and not get rewarded.”
Meaning: We would’ve
upset Wake Forest but for that
incredibly stupid alternating
possession rule on tie-ups.
Skip Prosser. Wake Forest
coach: "I think it’s the greatest
rule ever invented.”
Meaning: We would’ve
been upset by Manhattan but
for that incredibly brilliant
alternating possession rule on
tie-ups.
Antoine Petway. Alabama
point guard: "People think by
our record that we’re not a
very good team. But we just
beat Stanford!"
Meaning: I can't wait till
we get a hold of Syracuse. Just
look at their record, they're
not a very good team.
Lionel Chalmers. Xavier
point guard: “If this is not my
time, I'm not going to have a
time. I’ve been feeling good
and just knocking it down.
There’s really not too many
things you can do to me out
there when I feel like 1 can
make shots.”
Meaning: Texas better pick
me up at midcourt in Atlanta,
'cause I'm jackin’ 'em up as
soon as I get off the bus.
Rick Stansbury.

by double digits in the second
half, that anyone thought
we'd have a one point lead

ROAD from IB
coach Jeff Heusing.
Caleb Swann pitched a
strong 1-2-3 seventh inning
to get the Dawgs out of the
game with the win.
Elbert struck early, post
ing three runs in the first
inning and another in the
third for a 4-0 lead entering
the fourth inning. But the
Blue Devil offense would
not score again.
Central exploded for six
runs in the fifth inning, then
tacked on five more in the
sixth highlighted by a
Kyle Kinsey grand slam that
put the Dawgs ahead 10-4.
Adam Baldwin then walked
and later scored on a base hit
by Pat Belt.
“Kinsey, pretty much,
was the show," said Heusing.
“He helped us out came
through in the clutch and
wore their pitcher out. We
were hitting the ball hard; it
was just a matter of time
before we got on him.”
Kinsey’s sixth-inning
blast was his second homer
this season and his first
career grand slam.
Central scored one more
run in the seventh Majors
hitting a triple then scoring
on a ground-out by catcher
Ryan Stiede.
Offensively, Kinsey was
2-for-4 with a double, a
grand slam and 6 RBIs,
Stiede was 2-for-4 with 2
RBIs. Majors was l-for-4
with a triple and three runs,
and Tyler Marzofka had
good eyes, walking three
times.
The Dawgs were sched
uled to play at Franklin
County on Tuesday (results
not available at deadline),
before hosting Elbert County
on Wednesday.
On Monday. Forsyth
Central opens region play
with St. Pius X at home.
"That's what we’ve been
trying to prepare for, so
we’ll see how it goes," said
Heusing. "We know what
we re up against, but there’s
no reason why we can’t take
care of business."
