"More Georgians are finding
out how simple e-filing is, espe

"E-filing is off to another
good start," said IRS
Commissioner Mark W.
Everson. "More and more tax
payers are discovering the bene

Bill allows solo drivers
HOV lane use for fee
By Colby Jones
Staff Writer
Solo motorists stuck in
traffic may soon be able to
move into designated carpool
lanes, that is, if they are will
ing to pay a price.
The Georgia House of
Representatives on Thursday
unanimously passed a bill that
would open up Georgia’s
HOV lanes to motorists travel
ing alone, if the motorists are
willing to pay a toll.
Proponents argue the
measure would ease conges
tion in metropolitan Atlanta
and generate much needed
money for state coffers.
Opponents have dubbed the
toll lanes “Lexis lanes”
because they predict only the
rich will be able to pay the
Clerks of Court photos sought

Forsyth County Clerk of
Courts Douglas Sorrells is
asking for the public’s help in
locating photographs of his
predecessors.
Sorrells said the photo
graphs will be displayed
beside a plaque in the lobby of
the clerk's office in the
Forsyth County Courthouse.
While the veteran public
official has accumulated a
handful of portraits of former
clerks. Sorrells said he would
like the photo display to be as
complete as possible.
Families with deep family
roots in the county may have a
photograph in their archives
that would help complete the
collection, according to
Sorrells.
Photographs of the follow

FORBYTH COUNTY NEWS Sunday, Match 28,2004 -
tolls required to use them.
If the measure passes the
Senate, it likely will have little
immediate impact on Ga. 400
because the highway currently
has no HOV lanes.
Sen. Casey Cagle, R-
Gainesville, said Forsyth
County motorists should bene
fit from a resolution already
adopted by the Senate. The
resolution directs state
Department of Transportation
officials to study creation of
HOV and high-occupancy toll
or “HOT” lanes on Ga. 4(X).
During an interview
Friday, Cagle said the DOT
already has begun the study.
“Everybody that travels on
Ga. 400 has been in complete
gridlock,” Cagle said. ‘This is
one of the solutions.”
He disagreed with charac-

terizing the toll-roads as
“Lexis lanes” because he said
the lanes would ease conges
tion for all motorists on Ga.
400.
Adding separate HOT and
HOV lanes to Ga. 400 remains
a possibility, he added.
Cagle’s resolution did not
require approval of the House
because it did not create a new
law. If the bill passed by the
House Thursday is approved
in the Senate, the HOT lanes
would be an option for reliev
ing congestion on all high
ways in the state.
If the measure passes,
Georgia will join California
and several other states with
HOT lanes in place. The pro
grams in those states have
proved successful. Cagle said.
